Subject: waste with march pump?
I'm putting pen to paper and designing my next brew system. I plan to
use a march pump to move my liquids around and I am wondering how much
waste is involved. So say I know I need 11.5 gallons in my boil keg.
I'll be drawing 5 gallons off my mash so I know I'll be sparging with
6.5 gallons. Am I going to draw 6.5 gallons exactly out of my hot
liquor tank or can I expect to leave some behind in the hoses (I would
think so). Moving from my mash to my boil keg will I again have waste?
If so, how do you measure it and deal with it?

Also, what's the best way to mount the pump to my brew stand? I've seen
a mounting plate at morebeer but every homebrew system I've seen online
looks like they mounted it differently. Is there any concensus at all
on how to best mount it?

Thanks for any info,

Dave

Remember that the pump can't create suction so if permanently mounted
it has to be below the lowest tank (and the lower the better). The
pump has real problems if air gets in the line, so be sure to put a
valve below the pump so that you can allow the liquids to push the air
out.

I have always been bad with reducing any loss in the system, but as the
system progressed into what it is now with 3 full sized kegs and two pumps
loss increased. With that in mind what I do to eleminate most of the loss
due to the pump/lines is I still have extra water in the HLT and use that to
flush the lines once the boil pot is empty. The biggest area of my loss was
in the CFC since I pump up hill thru it, so I just run leftover water until
I start lossing colorin the wort going into the fermenter and then shut the
system down. Pen to paper is always good, but I learn from the trial and
error method best to see what/where the problems are, and with mine I never
considered the amount trapped in the CFC when designing/building the
plumbing. As for mounting the pump look at where you can mount it on the
system you are building, what materials you have to work with, and the
equipment (welder, drills) you have available will determine where to best
mount them for your situation.

If your pump is kept below the level of the vessels, you will not lose
much in the hoses, but you might lose a half pint to a pint within the
pump.

Mount it so that it is easily movable. My pump is screwed to a wooden
board. Attached to the board are two pieces of sheet metal bent into a
hook shape. I can pick up the pump and hang in anywhere I want -- on
one of the cross-members of the brew stand, on the lip of a keg,
wherever.

1)Rather than trying to compute the waste,I would suggest that you design
with other thoughts in mind (wiring,distances-i.e.,heat
loss, height, portability) and then learn from a few runs how much waste there
is...easy to add extra water.
2) lotsa two and three tier setups on the net...here are some
http://www.hbd.org/rlaborde/rig.htm from a neighbor;
http://www.mkob.com/brew.htm from a nearby club
