Subject: lead in hoses

Someone just told me that garden hoses contain lead. I've
been running my hose water through a charcoal filter and
I'm wondering whether I'm poisoning anyone, and more
importantly, myself. Does lead leach out of a garden hose
into the water? If so, does a charcoal filter take it back
out?

I'm not sure about lead, but I am concerned with the plasticizers
leaching out. A simple solution is to get some food grade hose. The
stuff is sold for RVs, so you can get it anywhere that caters to that
kind of thing. I'm rather ashamed to admit that I bought mine at
Wallmart.

I also picked up some quick-disconnects, and I swap hoses when it's brew
time. A simple and cheap solution.

You're ashamed to admit that you're frugal? That's one of the reasons I got
into homebrewing...

You know, after drinking the import with the $6 a bottle price saying,
"That's good, but I bet I can make it for less..."

That's partly why I got into it too.. spending $12 every week or two for
bottled when I can make better beer for half that price.

I just work near the faucet, and have a 4 foot length of hose there. A quick
flush, and I don't worry. How much leaching can you have in 4 feet?

I also cheat and use the laundry tub in the garage for hot water to speed things
along sometimes.

In all likelihood, you're fine. I'm admittedly a bit paranoid and I try
to use "food grade" products where I can.

Cautious = Good.

You're careful about sanitation, ingredients, time, temp, all of that good
stuff, why wouldn't you be careful about your equipment too?

None of these are going to ruin MY brew!

Depending on how old your water pipes are there could be more lead in the
water system from your supplier to your house than you would care to know
about.

If that is the case I am a dead man ! When I was a kid I must have drank
100's of gallons of water out of the hose during the summers....

I had heard that as well, but thought the leaching type hoses
were more of an issue. So googling I find
