My fault :o) It was meant to be a "graver" or something like that.

You have to disassemble the machine, and take the rollers.
You work them with the gravel ("bulino", it's like a big heavy steel
nail) and a hammer, punching several marks on their surface (someone
prefer to knurl them on a lathe instead of punching marks).
Then you reassemble the machine, and build a hopper to feed the
grains.

Bye,
Alessandro

PS: most of the brewers i know use mills imported from US :)

Thanks. When I read "gravel", I was thinking "small rocks", and it just didn't
quite make sense.

You could put the roller in the street and do a few burn outs on it. :-)

Here in Italy there are several brewers that go "the very cheap way":
you can get a cheap "pasta machine" (http://tinyurl.com/2glg7w)
for 10-15=80, then use a gravel (or burin, we call it "bulino") and work
on the roller like this:
http://www.hbsardi.it/macina.pdf
and you are set to go.

Alessandro

I bought a PhilMill close to two years back and I am very happy with
it. Cranking by hand, I can crush 10lbs of grain in 10-15 minutes and
the crush is adjustable. The mill can also be motorized. They go for
about US$100 and, except for a corona, that's about as cheap as grain
mills come.

Corona-type mills go for about $50-60 (www.hoptech.com still sells 'em,
I think). But I think it does a crappy job on the malt compared with a
legit mill. Other than that, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything
store-bought for under $100. My original PhilMill (which sells for
about that much these days), is still going strong after about 8+ years,
and puts out perfectly crushed grain.

Depends on your definition of cheap. I have a BarleyCrusher that I
love, but it was around 150.00 with shipping.

I also have the Barley Crusher and am happy with it. I mounted mine to
an old printer stand on wheels and attached a $1 yard sale drill for
power. Works great.
