Subject: yeast separation at bottom of bottle

Just started brewing a few months ago and have been very happy with the results so far. I do notice one problem though, a couple bottles out of every batch appear to have a separation of the yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Sort of like a layer of sediment is floating over about a 1/4 in of beer at the bottom of the bottle. Any ideas as to what is happening and how to avoid this...thanks.

I believe what your saying is you see sediment in your bottles but it's floating somewhat. It's my guess that this is just normal sediment but it will appear to float once you start to move the bottle around. As Mark suggested work on removing as much as you can when you bottle. Often the racking canes come with a small black tip on the end which is designed to help in this area but other times you may have to do a bit more. I often will prop something up under the curve of the racking cane during the syphoning process raising it out of the sediment. This helps to eliminate a bit more before in goes into the bottles. Good luck! Steve

Unless I'm misunderstanding your question that's normal for naturally carbonated bottled brew. They all have a thin layer of yeast on the bottom of the bottle from the carbonation process. If the batch hadn't completely cleared before you bottled they can have a thicker layer as it settles out. Also depending on your bottling procedure and the particular batch, as you drain the last of the batch into the bottles you could pick up more sediment in the last few bottles. Just pour into a glass slowly and leave the last half ounce in the bottle and you should leave the sediment in there as well. For a cleaning hint I try to rinse all my bottles immediately after the pour. It's a lot easier than trying to clean the bottles after the sediment has dried out and stuck to the bottle. Mark R

Yeast will normally settle out, but it sounds weird that they're "floating" like that. I doubt it'll hurt anything though. Maybe just an illusion caused by looking through the curved glass, etc. John.

But mine was in every single bottle, and it appeared after I chilled the beer below about 40-45 F. I go rid of it by switching my coldbreak making product. from Irish moss to some danish product.
