Yesterday Oatmeal stout sounded really good to me, so my father in law
and I did a ten gallon batch with a grain bill as follows.

18lbs of pale 2-row
1lb of chocalate
1lb of roasted barley
1lb special aormatic
.5lb special biscuit
4lbs quick oats

So with a 25.5.lb grain bill and 4lbs of it being oats you can imagine
the stuck I got. I use a cooler and don't own a pump so when things get
stuck I am usually stuck trying different things to unstick it.
Yesterday I had an epiphany of sorts. I tried the usual method of
pinching the runoff line and rolling the fluid in it back up to kind of
backlet the tun. No worky. My f-i-l being both a mechanic and semi
professional horn player started making suggestions about blowing up the
tube. (he is a newb to brewing, this was his first batch).

After thinking about it for a minute or two it dawned on me what to do.
I have an extra gas side fitting for my corny kegs. I had three kegs in
the fridge, two of which were just conditioning after being pressurized
to about 20 psi. I took the extra fitting and squeezed the run off line
around it and burped the keg through the tun. Stuck fixed.

It's an idea. The more conventional method is to connect your hot
liquor tank to the mash tun outlet and do it more gently.

For oatmeal stout, we've had good results with a small mash in a big
stock pot with all of the oats and a some palle at 40 degrees to
degrade the gums before warming to saccharification temperayre and
tipping tinto the rest of the mash. No lautering problems with 30% oat
flakes.

I've had good results using half that amount of oats. Some OMS
recipes call for even less. Why not throw in a pound of rice hulls if
you're going to use that kind of oat bill?
