Subject: steriliser residue?

I have left my keg with steriliser solution sitting for a week! when I came
to empty and rinse it for use there was a milky sludge on the barrel that
looked like wall paper paste. Do you know what this is and is it going to be
a problem if I just rinse the barrel and use it or should I re sterilise
first? I do not usually leave it more than a day but as I have not used it
for a while I left it while my beer was fermenting.

I'm assuming you mean sanitzer and not sterlizer. What product did you use?

I don't fully comprehend the chemistry involved regarding stainless steal
but it's possible you stripped off a layer of the stainless and need to ..
what's the word for it.. condition the stainless again?

I think its only aluminum you have to re-condition if the alum loses its
oxidated layer.
Stainless AFAIK dont require this.
If the "steriliser" was iodophor, ive left some in plastic once, and it
created a slime film on top after what seemed like a month.

I'm wondering if he used Star San. I've noticed it tends to leave a
milky-white film if it sits a while.

I've noticed some soda ash on the dip tube after using B-Brite.
I remove and wipe clean before filling, as I remove all the parts
to sanitize.

What sanitizer are you using?

Although it seems that way, but stainless is not invincible. Caustic
sanitisers such as bleach, antiformin etc will corrode stainless. The
general advice given seems to be to keep contact time below an hour and
rinse thoroughly and get the item dry if being stored, i.e. no drips or
puddles.

Commercial breweries will do an acid wash in their stainless vessels to
neutralise the caustic.

IIRC John Palmer has a good section on this kind of thing in his book
or online at www.howtoberw.com

Cheers,
Mark
