Subject: shelf life of crushed grains

i purchased some grains from my LHBS the other day and crushed them, thinking i would be brewing within a day or two. however, i was unable to get to the brewing as quickly as i had assumed, and am left wondering how long grains that are crushed retain their freshness. a week? two weeks? longer? does it depend on the type of grain? (in this case i am only using specialty grains.) would it help to store them in the fridge? thanks. --greg

Crushed grains, if stored well (see above), can generally last for several months. Uncrushed grains, if stored well, can last for years. IMO, a couple weeks is no big deal. John.

He stores his unmilled base malts in them. Couldn't tell you if it works any better/worse than other methods, but I thought it was a nice way to vacuum pack a large amount of grain. --Jeff

I asked this of my LHBS last week. He put it in perspective of a couple of local brewbups that get their grain crushed. Hewas pretty sure that they do not have " just in time" inventory deliveries. Bottom line... we think 6 weeks is no big deal. But you could just leave it in the grain bag it came in and fold the top over. It would still evacuate all the air out. Also, since it's a vacuum cleaner, it wouldn't be damaging for some grain to get sucked in. --Jeff
