Subject: priming tablets - need sanitizing?
|
i always put some beer into bottles when i keg and i use priming tabs. How could i go about sanitizing priming tabs? It seems my bottled beer isnt tasting as good as the beer in the keg. there could be numerous factors that might go into this but i wonder if my old sugar tablets might be the problem. I have had the same bag of tablets with a rubber band wrapped around them for some time and they might be picking up some bacteria?

> How could i go about sanitizing priming tabs? I also haven't heard of "sugar" needing to be sanitized - bacteria can't live in it without water (I guess some could just be sitting on it). John recommended bulk priming, which is certainly the best. A last alternative would be to make a syrup (and boil it) and use a sanitized syringe to dose each bottle. My logic was (I used table sugar): 4 oz (weight) sugar for 48 (12 oz) bottles yields 1 oz (weight) sugar for 12 bottles. 1 oz (weight) sugar in 1 oz water = ~36 ml 1/12 of 36 ml is 3 ml syrup. So, for a 1:1 sugar(weight):water(volume) syrup, 3 ml should be a normal dose for a 12 oz bottle. I'm sure there are better ways to calculate this... but this worked fine the one time I had to use it. Derric

I don't think you need to, but the easiest way I can think of would be to pre-boil them and bulk prime. That kind of defeats the purpose of the prime tabs though. > It seems my bottled beer > isnt tasting as good as the beer in the keg. there could be numerous > factors that might go into this but i wonder if my old sugar tablets > might be the problem. There's actually a point where the sugar concentration becomes so high that it inhibits bacteria. Other than airborne bacteria just settling on the prime tabs (which shouldn't happen wrapped in a bag) I don't think they can spoil or pickup an infection. John.

Bacteria and wild yeasts will not grow on something as hard and as dry as primetabs. The same rule applies to honey. Unless it's diluted, it won't ferment.
