Subject: neophytical SG reading question

Hi helpful brewing type folks,

I've had my First Brew Ever in my primary (a 6.5 gal carboy) for a while
and I would like to know how best to take gravity readings without risking
too much oxidization. Do I have to siphon a bit out? Thanks!

If you're planning on secondarying it, then just wait until the krausen falls and then rack to the secondary (stealing enough for a
gravity reading during the siphon). If you're not (or just not yet) secondarying and are just curious, I've had good luck with sanitizing
the racking cane (without the hose attached). Drop it down, put your thumb over the top hole and "straw" out a little bit at a time.
After 4-5 strawfuls, I usually have enough in the gravity tube to drop the hydrometer into.

I've never worried too much about O2 in getting samples like that.... especially if there's any fermentation going on still. The
whole headspace in the carboy is filled with CO2 (which is heavier than O2). Just taking the airlock stopper off isn't going to let much
O2 in since the CO2 will just stay inside.

Ooh. The racking cane idea sounds good. I just want to keep track of the
fermentation. Thanks for the help!

First off depending on the brew I give it 7-10 days before I even check it.
Most likely it's done fermenting by then. If you are racking it to a
secondary take a reading then, just pump/siphon a bit into your sampler and
then put the siphon into the carboy as fast as possible, hose all the way to
the bottom to have the least splashing possible. If not racking, I guess a
long beer thief would work. I tend to secondary all my beers for dry hopping
and/or clarifying them. Hope this helps some.

For now just siphon some out, that should work fine. What I use is a
plastic "wine thief". It makes it really easy to grab a sample out of the
fermenter. Your local homebrew store should have one, if not I would
imagine that most of the online retailers carry them.

Basically something like this:

Just get yourself a turkey baster. Sanitize it and suck up whatever
amount of wort/beer you need to take a reading. Simple, cheap, and easy
to find.

If you have an auto-siphon, it doubles as a thief. Pull the center
part out and drop in the outer tube. It will fill from the bottom and
the little valve will hold the beer in when you pull put the tube.

Now that you mention it, I think the outer part of the autosiphon *is*
a thief. I think the same company {Fermtech) makes both, so it wouldn't
surprise me if it's the same part. I'll have to compare mine at home
and see if they are identical.
