Subject: how many lb grain in my cooler?
|
Ok...after 15+years of hombrewing I am finally going to go all-grain... I am rustleing-up-me-some fixin's, ta' make me a mashtun out of. I just measured an old coleman cooler I had laying around and I measured the inside and it was 7.5-9.5gal (28.3-35.5l). I was going to put a false bottom in it and use it for a mashtun. How much grain could I get in that there 10gal cooler? Am I crazy to think that I could get 20lb grain in it? My calcs say I could get ~18lb grain and ~23qt water in it. What do y'all think? Curt E.

Hey Curt, I have a 48qt(12 gallon) Ice Cube and can fit about 25-27#'s of grain in it with basically not enough room for a good mash out( I can add some mashout water, but not much, a gallon maybe). So that's about 2.08lbs. of grain per gallon of ice chest space. Obviously if you want more mashout space then it'll hold less grain. Hope if that helps a little. --Alan

My mash tun is a 28 litre Thermos. I can get 10 kgs (22 lbs) in it with a stiff mash but it is a very tight squeeze. -- Andy Davison andy [at] oiyou [dot] ukfsn [dot] org

And you have to have laser-like precision with the mash temperature, because you'll have zero room for additions of water to raise/lower the mash temp. This is speaking from experience. If you really know your mash equipment and can nail the temperature every time, I see no reason why you shouldn't fill the tun to the very top. I'd suggest to the OP to do some trial runs with 15 pound batches before filling it all the way to the top. Scott

This is speaking from experience. Absolutely, plus you need to remember that the stiffer the mash, the hotter the strike temperature of the water needs to be as more of the mash is grain at a lower temperature. Strangebrew and Promash are good at working that sort of thing out but you can't beat experience. -- Andy Davison andy [at] oiyou [dot] ukfsn [dot] org

I said in another poast that I can squeeze 30lbs of grain into my 10 gallon cooler if I had to, but you're right, it's up to the very top and you've got no room for adjustments if you goof on the temps. I'd second the recommendation to get some experience with it before trying to push the envelope with a really big beer. John.

If I mash really thick I can get almost 30 lbs of grain in my 10 gallon cooler. Normally you don't want it to be that thick, but that's about as much grain as you can do in a single mash if you really had to. John.

Check out this link. It will calculate how much grain you can fit into your cooler mash tun. http://www.rackers.org/calcs.shtml Enjoy, M Curt E. wrote: > Ok...after 15+years of hombrewing I am finally going to go all-grain... > I am rustleing-up-me-some fixin's, ta' make me a mashtun out of. > I just measured an old coleman cooler I had laying around and I measured the > inside and it was 7.5-9.5gal (28.3-35.5l). > > Curt E.
