There are several good computer programs I've used for homebrewing.
Drew Avis' Strangebrew is pretty good, as is Beer Smith. If you're
interested, I've reviewed some brewware at my website,
www.homebrew-exchange.com. Just click on the "Review" section.

All I have ever needed is microsoft excel. Of course if you got a
computer that did not come with microsoft office one of the other brew
only programs will be cheaper.

I use openoffice myself. Does everything microsoft office does, and some
things MS doesn't do like direct PDF conversion, and is open source and free
to download from www.openoffice.org

Granted, the MS office has a much more user friendly database interface
through Access, but for the price difference I can easily deal with it.

I use ProMash, designed by a brewer for brewers. Has a plethora of good
tools.
good system for logging your recipes and tracking inventory.

True openoffice is pretty good for the price...or so I hear.

I only paid 10 bucks for my office suite through the University when I
was a student...so I have never really looked at openoffice.

When you say it does everything that office does, does that include the
VBA development tools? I have been slowly customizing my spreadsheets
and sooner they will look just like promash or beersmith or any other
brewing software., only it will calc things that way I want them done.
