here is a very good beer bar and a decent restaurant:

It's a very nice place for a beer fan to go in Portland (I stopped in
for the first time before the Maine Beer Fest earlier this year).

Can't make any direct suggestions, be we're gearing up for a Portland
trip in early 07 and I've started here:

Addendum - Gritty McDuff's is kind of touristy and crowded, especially
on weekends, but I cannot recommend their Christmas Ale and Scottish
Ale highly enough. Get them at the Great Lost Bear, though (and those
are both winter seasonals, you may not be able to get both
simultaneously, it's probably either Christmas Ale OR Scottish Ale.
Alas...).

As for where to buy Geary's Pale Ale in bottles - anywhere. Literally
anywhere. Supermarket, gas station, convenience store. If you want a
store that has not just Geary's Pale, but also a large craft/import
selection, try RSVP Beverage on Forest Ave (half mile or so past the
Great Lost Bear, heading out of town), or Downeast Beer & Beverage on
the corner of Commercial St. and Franklin (not at all far from
Shipyard).

Greetings, Portland resident here...

The rest of the posters are right on. There is really only one place
you need to go while here, and that's the Great Lost Bear. And while
it's true that Allagash does not have their own brewpub, the GLB is
often the only place around that will serve their more expensive stuff
like Interlude and Curieux, often from cask, and in stemware. Their
regular brews come in a normal pint glass. In addition, the guys at
Allagash make experimental stuff from time to time, in almost large
homebrew sized batches (1 barrel or less), and all of that either goes
to beer fests or gets poured at the GLB.

There are some public brewery tours, Allagash among them, and Shipyard
is probably worth the visit, too. Allagash is in the middle of a small
industrial park that is also home to Geary's Brewing and Casco Bay
Brewing (I believe Stone Coast too, come to think of it). You can do a
little micro-brewery crawl!

As for other parts of the Maine coast, I don't know how far north you
plan to travel, but these stick out:

Topsham - Sea Dog Brewing Company

Rockland - Rocky Bay (try the Viking's Plunder, it rocks!)

Lincolnville - Andrew's Brewing Company

Belfast - Belfast Bay Brewing (McGovern's Oatmeal Stout is among the
best)

Bar Harbor - Bar Harbor Brewing, Atlantic Brewing, and Jack Russell's.
Bar Harbor's Real Ale is fantastic on tap, less so in bottle.

Enjoy your stay in Maine!

If you've never had an Allagash beer, you're missing out. They don't
have a pub or restaurant, but their retail store will supposedly have
some vintage beers for sale:

Also if they have Interlude or Curieux (aged in oak bourbon barrels),
snap up as much as you can afford/carry!

It's been several years, but here's what I recall after touring everything
within walking distance of historic downtown Portland:

Lots of people like Gritty McDuff's, but I thought it was a bit too far on
the gritty side, seriously.

Sebago Brewing Company was alright, and is more of your typical brewpub,
although I'm not sure if they brew onsite or off, but they have a good
selection and great food.

Shipyard is my favorite brewery in Portland, for the beer anyway. They
offer tours and beer, but no food.

Brian Boru is very good for an Irish pub. They've got lots of European
imported beers, and the food is some of the best.

Three Dollar Dewey's is a junky kind of place with picnic tables and popcorn
on the floors, BUT they've like 50 domestic brews on tap, which is awesome.
Sit at the bar and quaff a few too many while discussing politics and
religion with the out-of-towner drunkards (such as myself back in 2002). ;)
