Subject: apple tree yield? Making cider.

Every fall my uncle provides both the apples and a press to make apple
cider. He's hoping to retire from the apple business in a few years so
I'm starting to think about growing my own. It might just be a dream but
indulge me, it's not so much about obtaining the juice as it is about
the experience.

So, if I were to grow my own apple trees, what could I expect in the way
of yield? I'd like to make say, 40 gallons, enough for the whole family.

Any advice would be great,

Thanks,

Dave

From my cider fermenting days:

Each gallon of cider takes around 3 bushels of apples. Bushels per
tree varies *widely* (I've got one tree that does 2 bushels a year,
and another that does 12). But you'll need a lot of trees[1].

Now I've got a local orchard that will sell me raw cider for
fermenting, so I don't bother.

[1] If you think that's bad, try making maple syrup.

You really make me grin from ear to ear. Maple Syrup - INDEED.. That is a
real challenge..!

I've personally given up on the apple growing and pressing adventures. Now I
just drive up to the mountains in NC and buy the fresh juice for my cider..

My recent pressing produced 20-22 gallons from about 22 4-5 gallon
buckets of apples. Different varieties definately produce differently.

Our brew club did a cider pressing for a couple of years. IIRC it took 40
pounds of apples to produce a single gallon of cider. Frankly I was not
impressed with the grinder's abilities. 40 pounds of mostly water and sugar
to yield about 8.5 pounds of juice seemed low.
