Getting back into brewing and not wanting to hoist glass carboys around
anymore (due to lower back issues); it seems possible to secondary in a
Cornelius keg fitted with a fermentation lock. Has anyone done this?

Thanks.

Russ, hello from N2LC.

I like the idea of pulling the relief valve every few days, since I'm always
down there fooling with something.

I'll be giving that a try here in another few days, when I rack my first
lager, a supposed Corona clone for my wife, one of the Real Beer Wimps.

I've been doing that for years. It works great. Since there's
virtually no fermentation going on in secondary, you don't even need a
lock. Just pull the pressure relief every few days.

Odd as it sounds, I have a beer in the tertiary which is a 6 gallon batch in
a 10 gallon keg. It needed a few more points so I fed it some old Edme
yeast. Figured I am now too lazy to pull the pressure relief so I took a
threaded gas disconnect, crammed on a 3/8" hose, then put an airlock into
the other end of the hose and taped it to the handle on the 10 gallon keg.
Dunno why I hadn't thought of it before...

Cheers,
Mike

These are good responses. Thanks for all the ifo; I hadn't considered not
being able to see if the beer had cleared, tho.

Thanks

But does that really matter? Just leave it in there a week or 2, and
you don't NEED to see it.

I do that when I'm using a 10 gal. corny for primary, but I've never
seen the need for it in a secondary.

Where do you get a 10 gall corney?

You need either a lot of money or a little bit of luck. They show up
once in a blue moon on eBay, but usually go for way too much money.
Word of mouth produces cheaper ones, should you ever be lucky enough to
hear about one. I think I found mine through a post on RCB about a
brewshop in Denver that had a bunch of them cheap. They went fast and I
think I got the last one. Just keep letting people know you are looking
for one and act fast if you do hear about one.

Our club picked up about 200 of them from a Pepsi distributor a few
years ago. I won't make you ill by telling how ridiculously cheaply we
got them!

The only problem that I see is that you can't see if the beer has
cleared.

Yep, I know of several people that do that. IMO it should work fine.
