So if finally got cool enough to brew in Austin, and I went
out to my brew building (a.k.a. garage), wiped 3 months of
dust off everything, and got ready for my first batch of
the (frantic) Texas brewing season.

Guess who left the valve open on his 100 lb. propane tank.
Yes, the tank I filled in June and used for exactly one
batch.

100# tank! That's huge! Do you take it somewhere to be filled
or does someone come to you? I've seen these tanks sold in Home
Despot and Lowes, but wasn't sure how I'd get it refilled if I
bought on.. I'm not lugging that thing back and forth for fills.

100 Lb. Tanks are not that uncommon. Even in the Peoples Republic of New
Jersey we can have them filled at a filling station. The transport is
regulated. Must be standing up and secured. Violated often.
My concern is 100 Lbs leaking into a closed garage.

I just started seeing them in the two places I mentioned above this year.
But there's no way I'm hauling a 100# tank to and from a filling station.
Will they deliver propane for 100# tanks? Or do they have to be bigger?

I use a 100lb (45Kg) tank. When it's empty, I phone the company that owns
the cylinder and they come and change it over. It costs AUD$20.00 per year
for cylinder hire plus the cost of the propane which is about 2/3rds of the
cost of propane I used to buy at the filling station ($1.75 per Kg compared
to $2.75 per Kg)
BTW, propane for vehicles is about $0.50c/Litre because the tax rate is
lower.

We can do that too. They will exchange out a 100 Lb. tank for another one
but they are responsible for its installation.
Its common where I live to see two, 100 Lb. tanks being used for a kitchen
gas stove. When they make the exchange they have to put the tank in service.
What you do with it when they leave nobody knows.
Larger gas installations can get tanks filled.

Around Boston, people have larger tanks that get filled.. not sure what size
they are.. but they seem bigger than the 100#'ers. I've never seen a 100# tank
on a gar truck. I have a contact at Airgas, I'll give him a ring and see
what he has to say. He's also a brewer..

I use a 40# tank, easy enough to haul and fill. Not that expensive.....

Same here in the suburbs of Tokyo, some older buildings are still using
propane to fuel the kitchen stove while the new(er) house/apartment next
door has regular gas. Sometimes I feel this country is still backward.
There are even railway level-crossings in the centre of town!

I can't get anyone to deliver. In retrospect, I think 100# was
a bit on the big side. It weighs about 140# full, and I am
still man enough to horse the thing into and out of the trunk
of my car. (Every time I fill it, they say "Well...we really
shouldn't let you transport it like that, but we'll let it go
this time.") The upside is that it lasts a year.

But I think you're right. Unless you have a pickup with
a bracket for the tank, I wouldn't bother.

And, as to the "closed garage" comment. It's not all that
airtight. Yeah, it could have caused problems, but I
never smelled anything.

I do a cigar or two a day, but not in the garage.
Besides, the lawn mower has been leaking gas too, so
I guess it's been _extra_ flamable in there.

Would y'all lose (the last little bit of) respect for
me if you found out my bedroom abuts the garage and, in
fact, there is a door from my bedroom to the flamatorium?

heck no, if anything is going to be lost, I'd say your eyebrows might be
in with a chance.
flamatorium, I like that one, caramalize and crisp at the same time...:)

I'm not man enough anymore, back issues.. DOH! I can swing a 20# tank
around, but I think I'd have problems pulling a 100# tank out of the
trunk of my Honda Accord. Man would that look silly!

I do not.. I may look into delivery if they do it around here, cuz I know
you get better prices for larger fills.
