Tried my first batch of Partial Grain last week. I brewed a Fat Tire clone
and did a full 5 gal boil.

I also tried fermenting in a 6.5 gal glass carboy for the first time. I
wanted to see what was going on and I could watch in my plastic fermenting
bucket.

Well I did not take into account for how much water the grain would soak up
(Opps) and then when I put the wort in the 6.5 gal carboy I thought, "that
looks like it's a little light".

But since I had no reference to what 5 gallons would like in my big new
carboy I just let it go. I checked the OG before pitching and it was a
little high (because it was so concentrated).

I racked to my 5 gal 2ndary today and I'm guessing that I'm about 1/2 to 3/4
of a gallon short of a full load.

I also siphoned the wort from the brew kettle into the 6.5 gal carboy
instead of pouring it through a strainer like I do with my bucket. Didn't
have a funnel big enough for the job. That left lots of hops in the beer
that I had to dodge with my racking today.

So lessons learned.

Figure out where the 5 gal mark on my 6.5 gal carboy is :)

Invest in a funnel with a screen to filter crap out of the wort.

Well, since I haven't had my coffee yet the first one made perfect
sense.

I rolled some white duct tape up the side of my carboys and used a one
gallon measuring pitcher to gradate it them gallon lines. Quarter
gallon lines between 4-6 gallons for accuracy. Works well.

Can't see it too well in that picture but you get the idea.

I used to dump my kettle through a funnel with a screen in it but it
(the screen) always gets clogged and I always end up with a
mess. Following a process of some others in r.c.b I started
whirlpooling my kettle with a spoon after chilling and then racking
carefully from the side. I leave most of the break material and hops
behind, and a good whirlpool will leave all the spent hops in a pile
in the center. Takes some practice but works well.

Just a thought.
