Subject: Shipping Bottled Homebrew

I am just about finished bottle conditioning the Oktoberfest I brewed
recently (My first homebrew). OK, OK I know it's late. My question
is: Is all of the jarring and potential temperature swings going to
cause a CATO during shipping. I would guess the taste will be effected
at least a bit, but I am more worried about bottle 'splosion. Any help
here would be great.

Thanks,

Mitch

I would make sure to pack it really well. Lots of people ship beer
to competitions without any trouble.

FWIW, I would recommend not sending it through the US post office since
sending alcohol through US mail is actually illegal. I'd use a private
carrier like UPS, Fedex, etc instead.

Yeah, I have shipped store bought stuff before, and always use my UPS
account, but thanks for the heads-up. Can't be too careful when
dealing with the Gov't. nowadays.

How do "Beer O the Month" places ship beer via mail?

If by "mail" you mean USPS mail, they don't. They use
private shipping companies (even ones, like UPS, that
sometimes state they won't ship alcohol for individuals).

My club uses DHL. It's an independent, like UPS, if you haven't heard of
it. They've really been growing in recent years, I don't remember ever
seeing DHL before I joined the club a couple years ago, and now I see their
trucks around all the time.

They have a BATFE liscence to distribute. The main reason the USPS
won't ship has to do with quite old laws that had to do with shipping
alcoholic beverages to avoid the plethora of taxes involved.

Also, many states have specific laws. In IL where I am, for instance,
I believe that beer, wine, and alcohol can be shipped and received from
a residential address. But IL is quite the rarity I believe.
