I saw Saranac has a holiday case with 12 different beers. Stuff like Caramel Stout that I thought would be good to try, and maybe give me an idea for my next brew. The problem is, I seem to remember having Saranac about 10 years ago and thinking is was pretty lousy. Of course back then I was in college and thought Beast Ice was pretty darn good (yikes). What do people think, is it worth the $23 for the case, or should I go with the Sam Adams winter pack which is 6 of their winter beers for about the same price. Thanks, John

Fezziwig AH!! Another fan!! Remember when they USED to sell it by the case??!!! Same with Scotch Ale! Now you can only get them in the variety packs. And why did they stop making the Honey Porter??!! Hard to find the Double Bock, too! Someone told me that if you live in the Boston area you can get kegs of Fezziwig. Boston is a 10 hour drive for me, but it would be worth it. > > Anybody got a clone for that? Sorry. Wish I did. I'm sure mone would never come close....

Nothing against Saranac, but I would go with the Sam Adams. I just wish they would go back to selling cases of the Fezziwig....

The Adirondack Lager is so-so. The Kolsch actually wasn't bad. The Caramel Porter was vomitous - my guts quiver and churn just thinking about it.....my ex-girlfriend actually filed a complaint with Saranac about their disgusting Caramel product and they sent us a coupon for a free 6-pack of our choice :-) Note: Saranac labels are a beotch to get off the bottle, so they are rotten for bottling re-use.

Have to say the Mocha Stout was my favorite. Caramel Porter is not one I would try. Some of the others were to the bland side. They are starting to tweak their beers. Their IPA now has more hops than the Pale Ale. They are also starting a High Peaks Series of bigger beers. Imperial IPA should be out on the shelves soon. I really like it. Read this opinion knowing that I have a buddy that works at the brewery. Bill

Thanks for all the advice. I went with the Sam Adams, which was on sale for $22 for 2-12 packs. Great deal here in PA. I've had the Holiday Porter and Winter Ale so far. Old Fezzy is next. All this Sam Adams has inspired me to do the Cream Stout clone from Beer Captured next week. John

IMRHO: your 10 year old assessment of Saranac is still valid. Between the two, Sam Adams would be my choice. But for $23, I might just buy two bottles of Chimay Grande Reserve and pocket the difference. Dick

It's true, I shy away from Sarnac for this reason alone (in addition to the fact that they seem to have a hit or miss or worse record). Makes me curious if there's a thread on this label topic...
