I haven't received anything. It would be nice to get some feedback. I
would also appreciate a "thanks for trying but we picked someone else"
email message.

Did you get a confirmation that your stuff ever made it there? I
submitted to my first and only competition a few months back--the
Bluebonnet Brewoff. After a few months, I found no feedback whatsoever
although reports came in about others getting theirs. I found out
eventually that my entries never made it. I suppose somebody at UPS had
a little party.

I guess next time it's DHL. I don't know what to do after that short of
physically dropping off entries. I'd have to be damn confident and have
a lot of entries to drive a few hours one way for that . . .

Get an online account with either DHL or FedEx. Print your own shipping
documents and then dropoff the package at an appropriate location. You
will then be able to track your package and ensure it made it to the
destination. If FedEx finds beer they will occasionally send it back to
the shipper or let them know that the package will not be delivered.
Other times if something breaks they will repackage and send it on to
the recipient. I've never had anything break with DHL, but in many
packages I have never had any issue other than a single instance of a
long shipping time heading from East to West coast.

Cheers,
Mike

That's what I did, but with UPS. I don't think I had tracking enabled
though. Then again I had to find a dropoff place. It was a store like
"Documents Etc." and God knows what they did with it. There were
supposed to be dropoff boxes in various places where I happened to be
often, but I couldn't find a single one.

I'd isolate it to a single fluke, conceding that there are a ton of UPS
horror stories.

I guess I don't understand, if you had an online account then why could
you not track the package? You paid for the package online, so somewhere
in your online account should be a reference to the package. If not,
then at least get a refund...

Cheers,
Mike

Note that any place that takes UPS packages should be able to give you a
tracking number -- they'll get one as soon as they print the mailing
label. If they can't do that, I'd try to find another package place.

With both FedEx and DHL you have the tracking info the second you print
the label since you have an account.

I've never had problems with FedEx when shipping contest entries. With what
I've heard from others about UPS being somewhat hit-or-miss as to whether
they'll even accept your beer for shipment, I've never bothered trying to
ship through them.

More often than not, FedEx is usually a little less expensive (for
comparable services) anyway.

Yes, they received it. They called me at home with a minor question
about the category that I submitted it to.

I'm not mad at them. It would be nice to get some feedback though. I
think that was probably one of the best brown ales that I've made. :-)

Update: I got my score sheets yesterday (December 1). My brown ale got
a 38.5 and was 3rd place in the SE region for this category. I'm pretty
happy about this given that this was my first competition. Anyway, I
just wanted to let everyone know that they've sent the score sheets out.
