I've been pouring over my brewing magazines trying to find a particular article that talked about a historic, I believe European, style of salty beer. IIRC, it was a few years back and was a short-ish article. I seem to recall they also mentioned that it was light in color and traditionally served in a tall thin cylindrical glass. Anyone remember such an article? Any idea which brewing magazine it was in or when it was published? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure which magazines you were looking about, but they were probably talking aboug Gose, a style from Leipzig, Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gose). Micheal Jackson (aka "The Beer Hunter") had an article about it a while back: http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001353.html IMOH, I tried one once (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/4909/10683), but did not find it particularly "salty". Yes! That's what I was trying to remember. Now having the name I found an article in BYO which isn't the one I was remembering but is good enough to start with. Thanks! <jswatson@yahoo.com > wrote in message news:1163140050.419105.14460@i42g2000cwa.googlegroups.com... > I'm not sure which magazines you were looking about, > but they were probably talking aboug Gose, > a style from Leipzig, Germany > (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gose). > > Micheal Jackson (aka "The Beer Hunter") had an article > about it a while back: > http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001353.html > > > IMOH, I tried one once > (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/4909/10683), > but did not find it particularly "salty". > > > On Nov 9, 9:58 pm, "TechnoShroom" <irc5s...@NOSPAMpacbellspam.net> > wrote: >> I've been pouring over my brewing magazines trying to find a >> particular article that talked about a historic, I believe >> European, >> style of salty beer. The article I found is in the January-February 2005 issue of Brew Your Own. It's not the article I remembered reading. The more I think about it, the article I remember reading was a Zymurgy article and has to be at least a year or two older. The BYO article is four pages long not including the recipe so it's a little long to type out. When I get home I'll see if I can photograph the pages and send them to you. Not the article you were looking for but Randy Mosher's Radical Brewing devotes a couple pages to Gose. He also mentions the technique of adding salt (1/8 to 1/2 teaspoon per 5 gallons) to boost mouthfeel in low gravity beers, a practice utilized with Gose.
