Subject: Reculturing Pilsner Urequell


Does anyone have comments to reculturing yeast from commercial beers?
In particular Pilsners, and Pilsner Ureguell.
I'm interested in knowing what beers might be best, as I've read that
some bottlers hide their yeast culture by adding a second yeast towards

the end of the process thus eliminating this reculturing.
Any thoughts and ideas?

I'm pretty sure Pilsener Urquell (along with most other pilseners) is
filtered prior to bottling -- making culturing from a bottle difficult
or impossible if you have no access to the unfiltered product.

However, I'm pretty sure Wyeast 2278 is the Urquell strain -- you can
just buy one pack and maintain the culture on slants or other media
yourself if you'd like. White Labs also maintains a number of Pilsener
strains.

Quite a few commercial beers are pasteurized making yeast reculture
impossible.

You'll need to research the beer that you are interested in so that you
aren't wasting your time.
