Subject: ProMash under wine

A computer question, nevertheless brewing related:

I have recently bought a copy of ProMash and installed it on my Linux
system, running under wine as Sausalito Brewing's home page promises.
It runs fine and looks good as well, except for one problem: For some
reason, the display seems to use a tab spacing of 4 columns, as opposed
to the 8 column setting it appears to use running under Windows. As a
result, all of the data tables (ingredient descriptions, inventories,
etc.) don't line up in the right columns.

I've asked Sausalito for help a couple of times, with no result -- no
surprise, since their resources are obviously focused on brewing
problems rather than OS differences (although it would have been nice to
at least get a "Sorry, we can't help" message). Has anyone else here run
into this problem? If so, were you able to fix it? I've also looked on
the Wine homepage, with no luck -- hmm... haven't asked the wine crowd
for help yet... I'll try that now and see what happens.

A major disclaimer here, I'm *no* kind of Linux (or Win32) maven; but
it may be that your X drivers are set up to present, through wine, a
different screen resolution than ProMash expects to see, and that
there is horizontal folding as a result. If you're set up with a
high-res monitor, try dropping back down to 1024x768 or even 800x600.

Just a swag.

Good suggestion, but -- as I just told stencil in a private email -- it
didn't help. Guess I'll keep trying...

I see the same issue when running under Wine -- I've just sort of
learned to ignore it.

I've had the same problem, plus some of the buttons are screwed up (gray or
black boxes where text or images should be). I needed to keep Windows for
some other stuff, so I have Win2K running under VMware and now run ProMash
under that.

I have the same problems. I have learned to ignore the column spacing. But
I hate having to guess which button does what on the main panel; I can
memorize it for a while, but I'll forget everything after a good night's
sleep.

I've tried several of the native programs. QBrew looks good, for example,
but none of them are as extensive as the original. One of these days, if
those people at my day job will just quit bugging me so much, I'll write my
own.

I use qbrew. It is a lot less comprehensive than things like Promash,
Strangebrew and Beersmith but it is great for using just as a recipe record
and for simple recipe concion. There is also a java version of
Strangebrew <http://sourceforge.net/projects/strangebrew/ > which I really
ought to get round to looking at again. Brewsta
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/brewsta/ > also looks good.
