The area in which I live is known for peanut production...and the name of my
homebrewery owes its name indirectly to peanuts...so I was wondering...

Any of you brew with peanuts? are they "starchy" and might they have some
fermentables to contribute to the mix? any ideas about how much to add in a
5 gallon batch, and how to prepare them?

Thanks in advance,

Ricky

With all the oils, peanuts would be totally unsuitable for brewing.
However, last week I did taste a brew that did use some peanut extract
for flavoring in a light ale. It was not bad at all. I wouldn't want
to drink a second one at the same session, but would be nice every now
and then.

If you live close to a peanut farming community, I'm surprised you don't
know the basic composition of peanuts.
I haven't googled or anything but I'm fairly sure they are about 50% oil and
the rest is very high in vegetable protein, pretty much the opposite you
need to brew with.

Thanks for the reply. Even though I live in a farming community, I don't
really now much about peanuts except for eating them, lol. I also live next
door to the US's largest helicopter training facility, but I can't fly the
darned things either! :-)

Doing great. I was coming home from work yesterday and got a chance to watch
the Apachee pilots doing some target practice. Simply amazing birds! I'm
glad they are on my side, lol

I assume you were stationed here at some point?

My favorite reference for questions like this is at
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search

The largest components of 100g of raw peanuts are
7 water
27g protein
50g various fats
16g various carbohydrates

Not promising. By comparison, raw barley is about 78%
carbohydrate, 10% protein, and 1% fat.
