The short story - I'm being forced to change service providers. I can stay with dial-up if I have to but being forced to change I'm considering high speed. My only two choices are Earthlink and Roadrunner, both through Time Warner. I've heard better comments about EL but nothing specific, and that RR email is the pits. My questions - Any users have anything they want to share before I decide? And does anyone have experience with the news server of either company as related to RCB? At over a 400% cost increase I'd like to avoid a third party news server. Thanks. Mark R

So far I haven't had any problems using either RR's email or news server. Admittedly though, I do use a GMail email account as my primary one. After switching employeers, internet companies, etc several times and loosing my email address each time, GMail is a much better choice, plus you can store almost 3 gigs worth of email with them, and search all of it using the google search engine. If you would like to switch to GMail let me know and I'll send you an invitation... Ricky

I can't comment on either EL or RR. I use Comcast, my cable television provider, but run out of Unix shell account with a mega-procmail filter. > My questions - Any users have anything they want to share before I decide? > And does anyone have experience with the news server of either company as > related to RCB? There's nothing wrong if you haven't but I would at least try it. Now's the perfect time since you have to switch anyway. I switched to high speed a few years ago and it really changed the way i do the business of life. From online billpay to investments. And no waiting. On this newsgroup alone I have 106,641 messages downloaded going back to July 2003. It took maybe 30 seconds to download all the headers. I still use dial-up on my laptop sometimes when I'm on a detachment (active Navy) but since I'm used to high speed it's so slow I only do minimal tasks. I've used a cable connection from Cox back in Va Bch and now I use a Comcast cable connection in CA, both with no complaints. I've never used DSL so I have no advice there. If you know high speed and only need dial-up then no harm, no foul but still opt for a free email account. 20 years from now you'll still have the same email address and you'll have never paid a dime for it. As Ricky did, I'll also offer you an invitation to gmail if you want one. Also, if you switch, look into VOIP telephone service. I've used it for a couple years now and it's been great. I've used Vonage and Sunrocket. Both are good but I like Sunrocket a little better. I've probably saved close to $1500 in phone bills in that two year span. Tony
