I bought a 6 pack of a Michigan brewing company IPA. They are not twist tops, but as I was cleaning the labels off I noticed ON the bottle (not the label) along with the coding, it says no refill. Now these don't look the same quality as the old buy and return bottles from back in the day, but they are longneck 12 oz. beer bottles. Is there really a reason or is this just so I don't return them to be refilled by the brewer?

Victory Brewing and Sam Adams bottles are similar to what you discribe, but marked on the label rather than in the glass. As far as reuse for home brewing, I have reused several cases of both of the above several times with no ill effect. They seem to seal as well as normal returnable bottles. They are a bit lighter (thinner glass) but I have not had a single neck break even with several (maybe two dozen?) recappings with a twin handle (neck grabber) capper. With a bench capper, I'd guess they would last almost as long, if not as long, as the old returnable bottles. The big things to be concerned with are; look at the mouth of the bottle, it should have a nice rounded O-ring shape so the cap has a good fit above and below, and if you use a neck grabber type capper, you need a solid neck ring for the capper to grab. Twist-offs are sort of square topped, don't seem to seal well, and let air in. Thin necks without a solid ring for the capper to grip (like on Guinness bottles in the US) will sometimes break when capping. I have tried twist offs, and have had some good / some bad history with them. Out of a half dozen cases, I've broken 3 or 4 necks (messy) and had about a 50/50 ratio of the beer tasting off from not getting a good air tight seal. On Guinness bottles I've never had an off taste, but have broken about 15 bottles out of 4 cases capped. hth Mike -- Mike Undercofler Howard, PA Email: michael@**cut_from_stars_to_arrows >>mlux2.com "Gerard Eberlein" <dormouse@charter.net > wrote in message news:mF2dg.35$Ft.12@fe04.lga... >I bought a 6 pack of a Michigan brewing company IPA. i believe that it's a "legal-ese" phrase, indicating exactly that - the brewer isn't gonna give you a refill. the phrase is on many commercial bottles (beer or not), such as the Coca-Cola bottle i'm drinking from. i think it's simply printed on the glass, not on the label. feel free to refill it with whatever you want.
