I am something of a beer snob but find myself drawn to this particular
lager. Maybe it is because I am a native Rhode Islander and this
has been a historical "Rhode Island beer". Anyway, when I don't have any
of my own beer to drink O go with a 'Gansett!
Anyone else here try it at all? Ever since they have re-introduced
the brand I think they have kept distribution to CT, MA, and RI
so it isn't widely distributed. Indeed, I believe they have stated
that they would prefer to not overextend themselves and keep themselves
just within New England.

It wasn't the location that surprised me. I was wondering why anyone
would want to use Lake Ontario water. Ugh.

I didn't know they stopped making it. It's been way to long since I've been
back to RI. Years back I used to buy a case and bring it home every time I
went back to visit the grandparents. That's all Grandpa used to drink. I
remember fondly sitting under the trees on Plainfield Pike drinking and
talking while watching the crops grow. My dad was from Providence and mom
was from Cranston. I need to get back up there for some good clam cakes and
chowda. Wash that down with some homebrew and I'd be in heaven. :-)

Wash that down with some homebrew while reading Lovecraft and you'll
be on your way to someplace else!

Smile, Cthulu loathes you.

(Providence is (was) the home of HP Lovecraft and I've always wanted
to visit for that reason...)

I was born and raised in RI and had never heard of HP Lovecraft. So I looked
him up and now I know why I have never heard of him. Obviously not one of
the state's favorite sons. A whacko who was born of whackos (Dad died of
syphilis, Mom of a nervous breakdown). With all the great stuff you can
relate directly to RI you had to come up with HP Lovecraft?
The Food, The mafia, the sports (Mt St Charles Hockey)
etc, etc....

And you come up with HP Lovecraft?

That is just so wrong on so many levels. Don't tell any more people you are
from RI.

So pass the clam cakes and quahog chowder (clear) and give me a Gansett
neighbor.....

And 100 years ago it was the play ground of the REAL rich and famous. You
forgot to mention that they did have one honest politician that wasn't
related to the mafia many years ago. Of course he was a one term wonder.

What one politician are you refering to?

You see I lived there from 1960 to about 1990 and no names are jumping into

HPL hardly holds a copyright on being a writer/musician/artist with a
dysfunctional past and an out-of-the ordinary lifestyle.

The only thing we can slag HPL about in this newsgroup is that he was

Wasn't Narragansett Brewing Company bought out by Falstaff in 1965, Falstaff
never recovered from that purchase and went out of business in 2005?

If I had to pick a "world's worst beer" it would have been Falstaff with
Sing Hai a close second. =O-

Not exactly that simple but Falstaff did buy them out at one point.A
very interesting history here
http://www.breweriana.com/history/historygansett.html
as well as at the company website.
The bottom line seems to be that the old brewery went too long without
upgrades and when it came time to modernize the costs were mind numbing
and required
concessions from the city and utility companies. Unfortunately, no
agreed could be reached between all the factions involved.
Nowadays, no doubt the city would have bent over backwards
and provided ridiculous tax breaks to keep such a big employer around.
*sigh* How times have changed.

I had some in MI back in 1986 or so - what I remember most is the rebus
puzzles under each cap. I think it was the cheapest beer we could get -
only sold in 12 packs.

I was 18 so don't recall the flavor of it.

East Greenwich product myself. Warwick school sysytems and URI. Summer time
in RI, it's hard to beat that.

Here's a recent article about Rhody food from someone who used ot work for
The Journal (The Prov one not the Wall Street one)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/11/AR2006081100202.html?referrer=emailarticle

Gansett beer was not anything you would consider a "craft" brew but it did
have a following and there was a brewery in Cranston until it was sold to
Falstaff.

I would love to find the recipe and make some up for old times sake.

Here is the current site:

http://www.narragansettbeer.net/

Here is a pretty comprehensive article ont he history of the beer/brewery:

Brian,

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was a navy brat but spent every
summer in Cranston. I grew up on all that food. I lived for Rocky Point
amusement park and the Chowder Hall every summer. How could I have forgotten
Dell's. When I'd go back for a visit I used to load up on quahogs, Dell's,
and grandma's blueberry jonny cakes.

I know it's off topic but there used to be a family owned meat packing
plant, I think in Providence, that made some sausages and natural casing
dogs that my dad couldn't get enough of. I'd have to stop and bring home a
20 lb box of each every time I went for a visit and the last time back there
was 20 years ago. Not sure of the spelling but the name was Minnell's.I've
searched for info on the web but haven't been able to find anything. I see
you're a Houston transplant now like I am but you wouldn't by any chance
have any memory of them or know what happened to them.

Are you in Houston?

Sorry I don't recall the meat packer. I do remember a brand of hot dogs
called "Saugeys" (sp?) that were a kind of natural casing thing. As far as
specialty meats go, there were so many great Italian and Portuguese meats
that I could never keep track of all of them.

Go Red Sox!

Unfortunately. Haven't been back to RI since a brief visit in 80. I
transplanted here Thanksgiving of 1981. I spent summers in Cranston on
Plainfield Pike which was mostly an Italian neighborhood. The grandparents
place has been turned into a Buddhist temple now. One day I'd like to get
back there to check out a shrine that they supposedly built to my
grandparents as the original caretakers of the sacred land.

I've been here log enough to be an Astros fan but dad is Red Sox all the
way.

As Brian responded what you are thinking of is probably Saugies.
I don't know of any specific plant that makes them but they are still
very much around. Being such a niche item it may be hard to find online*
for ordering and such but they can easily be obtained locally.

*Very few niche RI businesses have much of an online presence, sadly.
My favorite, however, is http://www.supri.com/ . If you ever ventured
into the Westerly area and had this fantastic and authentic italian
sausage I am sure you would have a fond memory of it! Ordering from the
website is sort of archaic(submit the order and then call to give CC #)
but that sort of backwardsness is so typical RI that it is forgiveable! :)

P.S. I just had some supri and some Narragansett so the post is totally
on topic! ;)
