I'm devastated, Steve. I have always been told that Ozzies described
American Light Lager as "like making love in a canoe".

Steve was taught that if you can't say anything nice, don't say

I got it right away and thought it was kind of funny... no taste...no
comments. :-)

I wholeheartedly disagree, Mark. Bud does have a taste. It's not
beer-taste, but it's a taste.

My recollection is that it tastes like water you have left
over from cooking rice after it's been chilled.

I really didn't find it an unpleasant beer. I can not find anything either
for, or against the taste as it is very light. Without fear of being labeled
sexist I would describe as a 'lady's beer' as it is only lightly hopped.
There is only one variety available here which I presume is budweisser
original at 4.9% abv. At least it is imported - a lot of the 'premium' range
is now brewed by local contract brewers with very few of them actually
getting anywhere close to the taste of the original.
BTW, budweisser descibe their beer in local advertising as being the 'worlds
biggest selling premium beer'.

That's exactly what it is. The story goes that during WWII they changed
their recipe to appeal to women since a lot of the beer drinking men were
off fighting the war. They lightened up the body and lowered the hops.
Once the war was over, they just never changed it back. I'm guessing
because they realized that it was a lot cheaper to brew that beer than it
was to make something with more flavor/character.

Personally, I don't really consider it beer. It's a "beer" in the same sense
that a McDonald's hamburger is a gourmet steak. They're roughly the same
ingredients, but that's about it.

The legend I've always heard was that after prohibition, the surviving
breweries wanted to increase sales, so they brewed to appeal to women.

Budweiser has the same ingredients as a McDonald's hamburger?!? GAAK!

But you may be onto something here! That *would* explain the lack of both
malt and hop character! Maybe it's a mindset thing. Next time I'm hungry,
I'll drink a Bud and try to imagine in my mind that I'm eating a Big Mac!

No... That won't work... I don't like Big Macs, either!

There was a story in the Wall St. Journal back in April that talked about
how AB has actually increased the bitterness of Bud lately to try to counter
the trend toward microbrews and the like (not that it's going to help much).
Supposedly they've kept samples of the stuff in cryogenic freeze so that
they can keep track of the changes over the years.

I am quite fond of Budweiser World Select. They sell that in the
premium beer section.

I have been to a lot of liquor stores around this country that sell
Fosters as a "premium" beer. It ranks (emphasis on "rank") up there
almost as good as Bud. :(

My liquor store of choice has the Bud in the cabinet next to the
Malt Liquor.

Au contrare! If you concentrate, you can taste the hops in a
Fosters Lager. Fortunately I can no longer distinguish Bud
from Millers from Coors except that Coors is closest to a water
taste. Fosters is a smiggen better than Bud - and a small smiggen
at that.

I went to see Slayer a couple weeks ago in my home town. I wanted to
see one of the opening bands so I went in a bit early. To my dismay
and horror everyone was pitching brown beer bottles around, and I was
convinced I had stepped into the makings of a gore-laden bloodbath.

After ducking several bottles and getting thirsty (it was around 11
bazillion degrees inside) I wandered over to the bar and found that
all they were serving was Bud in "plastic" bottles. I was very much
relieved, and even had a few of them (since there was nothing else).

First time I've had a Bud since high school. It's still vomitous,
barely potable swill, but the plastic bottles were a lifesaver.

(had to add an anecdote to the thread)

More like "Strange Brew" - a mix of beer, anti-globalisation and Hamlet.
