Does anyone know where I can buy or how to build a fancy thermometer? I
want to be able to have it alarm or somthing when it reaches a set
temperature. Like so I can set it to alert me when the wort temp
reaches 170 then again when wort temp reaches boiling. TIA!

I bought one at Sears.

Yea I got one for a gift has a probe on it and you can set a timer or you
can set it for a certain temp. I use it for cooking poultry and roasts too
cause the probe is oven safe, the unit connects to the probe via wire and
has a magnet and sits outside the oven...or brew pot :) look at any good
kitchen store.

my wife bought a set of pans that came with something like that from
canadian tire - but I think you can probably get something individually. Try
checking a kitchen supplies store.

I have a CDN model. The probes don't like being dipped in sanitizer so
don't use them in cases where you want to probe something without
infecting it. I went through three probes before figuring it out. CDN
mailed me a free one each time, but it becomes an uncomfortable
situation at that point.

I have a similar model but it bottoms out at 32 F (flashes LL, loose
lead, I guess) so it eliminates one data point when calibrating against
other thermometers. I'm not such a fan of calibrating over boiling
water. There is the Maverick T-73 with wireless alarm. Check out
alt.food.barbeque for extensive opinions on thermometers.

The first kitchenware store on the right in Northbend Washington's
outlet mall sells them for $5.

Got mine at Bed Bath and Beyond for around $20. Has a timer, the alarm
you're talking about, and about a 7 foot cable for the probe.

Just look around. They're easy to find.

You can sanitise (food grade) the exterior of the probe ... do not let
water into the part where the wire is crimped to the probe ... unless
you want to buy a new probe.

Corrosion was probably due to bleach being used as a sanitiser ...
bleach "eats" stainless steel.
