Subject: Looking for Smithwicks Recipe

I'm looking to make a clone of Smithwick's Ale (dark, malty irish red
ale). If anybody knows of a good clone recipe please let me know. So
far this is my working recipe for a 5 gal AG batch assuming 75%
efficiency.

9 Lb Marris Otter
12 oz Crystal 60L
8 oz cara-pils
2.5 oz roasted barley
Mashed at about 153F (Batch Sparge)
Hops (Full Boil):
.5 oz Kent Goldings 60 min
.5 oz Kent Goldings 20 min
.25 oz Fuggles 10 min
~18 IBUs

Any thoughts on this recipe or other recipe suggestions?

Looks good. Bitterness might be on the low end depending on the alpha acid,
but it's still acceptable. I like my brews on the malty side, if you do too
then I'm sure you'll like the result of this recipe.

Going with the standard Wyeast Irish Ale for a bit of Diacetyl

I'd be interested to know how this turns out. You didn't mention your
choice of yeast.

Hi Brian, I made a Smithwick's clone this spring that I thought came
pretty close (IBUs were actually ~24, because I did a concentrated wort
and diluted it after the boil). It's not that different from your
recipe -- a bit more hops. My only complaint was that it was more
brown than red, so I would scale back the RB a bit (2-3 oz instead of 4
in this case), and maybe try to find some CaraRed or similar crystal
malt.
