Newbie questions: I've looked at several options for draining the gallon or so of wort that sits in the concave portion of a converted keg kettle. My question is rather than building a screen or manifold and siphon it could I just drain the last gal. by tipping and straining in a colander? It seems so simple that there must be something wrong with it....... As a related question, as I'm reading about whirlpooling and looking at the care taken to get off the hop sludge I'm guessing that dumping everything to the primary is a bad thing. Are those hops from the boil "spent" at that point and would degrade the wort if they got transferred? If there is no problem with it I would just tip & drain (as is open 1/2" ball valve) and should some hop sludge transfer over not worry about it. I must be missing something simple. John F

You could install a 'pickup' tube like the one pictured here: http://brewiki.org/moin/wiki/moin.cgi/BrewPot (3rd pic down). Just make sure to whirlpool it good. Jerry

You could, but what is in that final gallon? Is it wort or is it trub and break material? > As a related question, as I'm reading about whirlpooling and looking at > the care taken to get off the hop sludge I'm guessing that dumping > everything to the primary is a bad thing. There are also reasons, although nothing terribly critical, for not wanting the break material in the fermenter. IMO, if you have an easy way of leaving this stuff behind or straining it out, then do so. I wouldn't go out of my way to put it all back in. > If there is no problem with it I would just tip & drain (as is open > 1/2" ball valve) and should some hop sludge transfer over not worry > about it. If you've got a significant amount of wort that you are leaving behind, then go ahead. If the remainder is mostly trub then I wouldn't bother. John.
