Subject: Is it time to brew again?

Hi all
The weather has been hovering in the early 70s in the days and dropping
to the mid 60s at night (Chicago). Can I assume that the brewing
season has begun (i.e. for non temp-control fridge types who are slave
to ambient temps). I just bought a Sanyo 4912 for kegging so I am
eager.
Thanks.

I spent my first seven childhoods in Chicago so I know Chicago
has only two seasons - Winter and Road Repair. I live in a
two story ranch just west of Ball-a-mer (the City that slurs).
My house is built into the side of a hill so my basement opens
into my back yard and I get to fermenting on my basement floor
come ober. But Chicago basements are the best. They get
colder early and stay colder even when the lows hit the 80's.
So best of luck to you.

I have a fridge without a temperature controller. With two
primaries in it, it has never dropped below 59F (15C) or
above 68F (20C). Empty it will drop to 40F (4.5C). My chest
freezer has a Ronco Controller set at 65F (18.3C).

My major problems with brewing ale are (1) I have a lousy
electric stove (almost unheard of in Chicago) and (2) I can't
take the summer heat of brewing outside (also a Chicago
problem).

Remember: The more you brew, the less you need to buy.

Dick

Is that the Ronco Pocket Controller? ;-)

I could leave the fermenters outside on the balcony. Get some black
garbage bags to shield the light. The Chicago temps are predicted to
have a high of 77 this week.

IMO, inside would definitely be better unless your inside temps are
actually higher than outside? The reason I asked is because even when
the outside temp is 80+ my basement usually stays in the high 60s.

Necessity is the mother of invention...always a way around problems if you
want HB. GL.

What are your inside temps, do you have a basement? Those are more important
than the outside temp, assuming your fermenters are kept inside.

Sounds like you might be working from an apartment. One thing you might
try is putting the fermenters in a larger plastic tub filled with
water. That would moderate temperature fluctuations, and you would
probably wind up with the average daily temperature. You could add a
small amount of ice if you wanted to during the day, or just use the
wet towel trick.

Black plastic garbage bags might not be the best sun shields, since
they will absorb sunlight and heat up.
