i keep hearing about how homebrew beer is much better than commercial beer, and have been wondering, maybe the reason i dont like beer is that all the beer i've tried has been bad beer. on the other hand, i really like soda, and have heard that you can "brew" your own root beer and such with brewing equipment. part of the reason i am looking into this, is that i've just bought my first house, and now have room to actually do some projects like this. on the property is a bunch of plum bushes, maybe i can migrate to plum wine (which i've tried and DO like)

Actually most commercial beers are pretty decent representations of their styles. The big issue is that most most commercial beers are American Light Lager style, and that may not be a style that appeals to you. The easiest thing would be to buy several different styles of commercial beer and see what you like. Look for pale ale, oktoberfest, bock, stout, porter, things like that. If you find something you like, you can usually, with a bit of practice, make beers comparable or better than most commercial ones. If you don't find any beer styles that appeal to you you can try wines. Either standard grape wines, or fruit wines like you mention. Bryan p.s. What are "plum bushes"? Last time I looked plums came from trees. Maybe you have dwarf plum trees?

They usually offer "samplers" of all the beers they brew on premise. If you find something you like you can explore further into that style by trying different beers from different brewers. What homebrewing really does is give the brewer a chance to accentuate what they really like about beer, therefore giving them a "better" beer. It's all opinion ! HTH, Duke

It all depends on what he doesn't like about the comercials he has tried. Too bitter? <snerk, snicker > Try a nice Bock or Dopplebock. Maybe a Scottish ale or chocolate porter. Too sweet? There are a couple of options there. If you like the bitterness from hops then try an India Pale or Imperial Pilsner. If you don't like hops then a robust (black) porter or stout can be nicely balanced without the hop bitterness. Not enough body? Hell, try just abot anything that isn't an American Light Lager. Wheat beers can run the gamit of bitterness, but are usually on the less bitter end of the spectrum. Then there are the Belgian styles. They are usually not what I would suggest a person new to beer try right off the bat, but after the first one or two you really get to enjoying the unique flavors they have. If I was to suggest one for someone new to beers I'd go with Chimay Grande Reserve, or St. Bernardus Triple. Bryan

Don't like beer? Isn't that sacreligious? I agree with some of the other guys. You need to explore a bit more to discover what really captures your taste buds. American light lagers and pilsners arn't what ALL beer is. Poke around at some of those specialty shops, find a beer that you can really enjoy. Perhaps a good wheat beer may do it for you. Wow, I hope you make it thru this terrible time in your life. Gee a guy that doesn't like beer..... That's a new one. Steve

Ours is having alot of people breweing everything from all grain to extract brews. Will be alot of homebrew to sample also. Gerard >

Write down these beers: Chimay Grande Reserve (Belgium) Dogfish 90 Minute IPA (Milton, Delaware) Goose Island American Porter (Chicago, Illinois) Lake Louie Warped Speed Scotch Ale (Arena, Wisconsin) The first three are generally available. My favorite, if you can get it is Arrogant Bastard Ale - have a pint and call it lunch! > on the other hand, i really like soda, and have heard that you can > "brew" your own root beer and such with brewing equipment. Nice thing about plums is they are less acidic than other fruits. You should checkout rec.crafts.winemaking and rec.crafts.meadmaking. Dick

My favorite, if you can >get it is Arrogant Bastard Ale - have a pint and call it lunch! Generally available _where?_ The only one of those that shows up in Las Vegas is Chimay. I've heard rumors of Dogfish Head sending product to California and/or Arizona, but at this time, those are just unconfirmed rumors. The small stash of 60 & 90 Minute IPA I'm sitting on was hauled back from a trip to the GABF. The only local bar that carries Dogfish Head (where they get it, I don't know) charges over $10 per bottle! I've only heard of Goose Island. I don't recall seeing it anywhere, not even in trips back east. My parents just moved to Ohio, though, so maybe it'll turn up in the shops there. As for Arrogant Bastard, OTOH, that (and most of the rest of Stone's products) are readily available here. If you have a local shop that does beer tastings, that's a good way to find stuff you like from among whatever is locally available. In Las Vegas, one of the Lee's Discount Liquor stores (the one way over on the other side of town on Lake Mead Boulevard) has been doing that for over a year now, with only a handful of repeats. They don't charge anything for them, either. If something similar is available in your neck of the woods, you might want to look into that. _/_ / v \ Scott Alfter (remove the obvious to send mail) (IIGS( http://alfter.us/ Top-posting! \_^_/ rm -rf /bin/laden >What's the most annoying thing on Usenet?

I make beer for me, everyone else be damned, and homebrew gives you that freedom.

: The first three are generally available. My favorite, if you can : get it is Arrogant Bastard Ale - have a pint and call it lunch! I had my first one of those this summer. It's almost a "mini-barleywine" since it's got so much maltiness and so much bitterness all at the same time. My brother has made a killer clone of it more or less following a 'net recipe using Chinook hops all the way around. : > on the other hand, i really like soda, and have heard that you can : > "brew" your own root beer and such with brewing equipment. : If you find a newsgroup for 'soda', email me. I've never made "real" rootbeer, but I used to make soda using flavor extract, sugar, and yeast to carbonate in 2-liter bottles. Worked fine, although getting the carbonation right was difficult. Force carbonation would be much easier to get right. -Cory -- ************************************************************************* * Cory Papenfuss, Ph.D., PPSEL-IA * * Electrical Engineering * * Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University * *************************************************************************

A corny full of water, heavily carbonated, and any flavor syrup you can put in a glass makes for instant soda of any type. The nice thing is that you are not stuck with 5 gallons of one flavor. Bob ]

If you're talking about Bud, Miller, Coors, etc, then I don't blame you. I don't really like those either. There are lots of really good commercial beers out there, but they're not ones you're going to see advertisements for on TV. Go to your local beer store and start paying more attention to beers you've never heard of before. Ask someone who works there for help in picking out some different styles than the mass produced stuff that most people buy. Tell them you're interested in some "Microbrew" beer. John.
