Subject: Hydrometer test jar size

When I bought my hydrometer many years ago I was a bit of a cheapskate
and didn't get a test jar. Now that I've actually started brewing I'm
thinking it may have been a mistake as I was looking around for something
tall and slim enough at home to use. Rather than order a jar and pay
international shipping, etc, I thought I'd get a medical test jar here but
they come in various lengths and diameters. So what I need is the size of
the average test jar.

Cheers

My test jar is a length of clear plastic tube (rigid) glued to
a plastic base. I bet you could go to the hardware store and
buy the pieces (and glue).

I live in a country where homebrewing is a very new hobby and is
actually illegal unless the Homebrew is under 1% ABV. So it's hard to find
certain pieces of kit therefore we have to import a lot of it and without
a credit card it's also a PIA so we have to improvise, so medical jars are
similar in size to hydrometer jars..... etc, etc....

Thanks Bob,

After posting I used my loaf and used Google and found they're
10", 12" and 14" tall. I'll see what I can get about 12". According
to a lot of my spam mails a couple of extra inches is better :-)

So, I'm looking for a jar about 30cm x 2 to 3cm.

If you don't want something clear, a length of PVC (or other) pipe
and an end cap would do the job.

...I believe that it needs to be CPVC and I agree that most folks read the
level over the top of the liquid rather than through the murky hot to hold
plastic

Unless you are using it on vary hot samples, I am not sure why CPVC would
be needed.

I'm taking it from boiling wort and my friends in plastic manufacture say
180 is the magic number...and it so says on the side of CPVC tubes
>Since you're dealing with such a small volume with the sample size, I

True... if you want to wait on a busy brew day and don't want an IMMEDIATE
read with a temp adjustment via conversion chart-I prefer to know right away

Since you're dealing with such a small volume with the sample size, I
personally would just cool the sample before testing. This would also reduce
your correction for temp factor and negate the use of anything that would
have to be heat proof. But, this does bring to mind another question:

Does the accuracy of the hydrometer decrease with the temp of the wort? or
do temp correction numbers still give a true reading when testing wort brom
the boil kettle as well as closer to 60 degrees?

Mine is 10-12 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. What you need is
something about the length of the hydrometer. Slightly shorter would work
as long as the lowest reading markings can be below the top when inserted.

I've had my hydrometer for about 10 years.... Only used it once
though, it's been in storage most of that time :-)

I think I can help you....<cue Paul Simon >

There must be 50 ways to break your hydrometer:

1. Just drop it on the tile, Kyle

2. Put it in hot wort, sport

3. Let it roll off the table, Mable

4. Use it as a stir stick, Dick

5. Underfill your test jars, Lars

6. Forget you laid it on the divan, Stan

7. What'dja just step on, Leon?

8. Is that a small crack, Zach?

9. Oh that damn dog! Og!

10. Catch it with your elbow, Elmo

11. What's that under the carboy, Roy?

12. Hot liquor tank, Hank.

13. Snag it with a hose, Rose

....

I'm not good at that kind of handywork, can't even cut a stright
line with a saw or scissors :-) I need to go to a hardware store
today for filler (another botched job coming up!) so I'll see if
they have anything suitable, otherwise it's the medical jar!

I have a test jar for my hydrometer. But I store the hydrometer
in the test jar and the test jar in a glass pitcher. My goal is
to go 10 years without breaking my hydrometer.

Thou shalt sacrifice a hydrometer unto the beer gods at least
twice a year, lest they inflict infections and stress-fractures
upon thee. That last boil-over was just a warning, infidel.

I consider this an OMEN.
Last night, before a FG measure, and whilst shaking off the sanitizer from
mine hydro, the thin neck snapped and crashed. No letting of blood occulted
tho. Had to get out my backup.

Omens are for physical science forecasters.

I rinse my hydrometer (also my hands) with iodophor before I
used it and rinse with 95F (35C) sprayed water.

You missed #15: Give it a shake, Jake.
