I'm curious roughly how many hours I can expect a bottle of propane (5
gal?) using a king kooker will keep 7 gal of water on a boil at sea
level. Just a ball park figure would be appreciated.

Propane is sold by weight, not volume. A standard 20lb tank lasts me
5-6 sessions plus BBQ and such.

Standard gas size in Oz is 9Kg (20lb). I got fed up with getting it filled
up and opted for delivered gas. 45Kg /100lb bottle delivered and $20.00/year
hire of bottle. This works out at $1.50/Kg (0.66c/lb) compared to getting
your own filled at $2.00/Kg (0.88c/lb) - with the added convenience of
delivery.
I got a 20 pounder for emergencies - rarely gets used though.

I use Metal Fusion's older burner (6in-long piece of 2in pipe,
throws a flame about a yard high) under a 15gal insulated
aluminum pot, usually with 8-10gal of wort. Bringing the wort
to a boil from 140F or so takes about 20 minutes. A lumpy
splashing boil at half throttle, with the flame tips extending
just past the bottom edge of the pot, eats almost exactly one
pound of propane an hour. =20

The day before a brew session I weigh the gas; less than three
pounds means a trip to Agway.

I like to keep two tanks. That way when the first one runs out halfway
though a brew session (it happens to everyone eventually), I just hook up
the second tank instead of having to stop the boil and go get a refill.

Amen, about $20 for a spare tank is worth every penny when your brewing or
BBQing. The darn things always quit at the worst time :)

I've already gotten 8 batches from my current tank and still have at least
one more. All I do is the 60 min boil, water for my mini-mash is done on the
kitchen burners.

I get 3 full brewing sessions (plus all the intervening grill use,
which is a lot) from the 5 gal propane tank on my Weber gas
grill. I've been thinking of getting another tank but haven't needed
to yet.

Note that I'm not using some high-fallutin' beer burner, just the
stand from an old turkey fryer kit.

Propane can supply 21548 BTU's per pound.
Your 5 gallons of propane can supply 107,740 BTU's.
You will need approximately 8000 BTU's to bring 7 gallons of water to a boil
on a 70 F. day.
You will need less to keep in boiling.
What is the rating on your burner in wide open position?
This should get you close.

Keep in mind though that these type of burners are not 100% efficient.

That's why I rounded down everything, except the know BTU/Lb. of propane.

About 30 minutes less than what you need it to.

I just brewed/boiled a 10 gallon batch on a rusty old inefficient turkey
fryer burner with a half filled tank with no problem. Got 'er done.

I did have a full spare standing by just in case, but I didn't need it
and there seems to be plenty of gas left.
