...to put under a 100-quart pot to bring 20 gallons to boil? How many BTUs should I be looking for?

Depends on how fast you want it to boil, vs how much you want to spend on gas. Regarding 5 gallon batches, it can be done with 30K BTUs and it can also be done with 200K BTUs. With outdoor propane burners, generally speaking the lower the BTU rating the longer it will take but the more efficiently it will burn gas. As you move up the range, obviously your "time to boil" goes down but you're cost per batch goes up since higher pressure burners are less efficient. Personally, I use either a 150K or a 180K BTU burner for a 10 gallon batch and it works fine. I crank it up all the way to reach a boil, and then turn it almost all the way down to maintain the boil. A similar propane burner would probably work just fine for 20 gallon batches as well. The 180K BTU burners are still commonly available at hardware stores as turkey fryer kits. If you wanted something stronger than that, you're probably going to have to do a lot of searching to get something special, and it'll likely cost a lot more. John.

Here's what you need. http://www.bayouclassicdepot.com/kab4_banjo_burner.htm I boil up to 30 gallons without problem with that burner. changey wrote: > ...to put under a 100-quart pot to bring 20 gallons to boil? How many > BTUs should I be looking for?

I thought I saw a pair of those under the wings on a 737........ We're not talking BTUs anymore, we're talking pounds of thrust....... Fortunately the nozzles are arranged to mostly cancel out thrust. A propane rocket is doable, using N2O as an oxidizer. Both pressurize themselves to similar pressures. I worked out the math once but decided the performance was too low to make it worth doing. -- Daniel O. Miller "The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. If you read down in the description, it's only 210K BTU which is basically similar to many burners available as turkey fryer kits. I've got one that is around 180K BTU. At the efficiencies we're talking about, they're pretty much the same strength in regards to actual heat output. So, it probably doesn't chew through propane significantly faster than most burners that homebrewers use. John.

They're slower, but pretty easy on the propane. -- Bill
