I've been using pellet hops for everything, pretty much, but they clog all my equipment, so I pretty much throw them into the primary with everything else. The beer produced has been great but I'm wondering if I should filter them out or use leaf hops instead. I've used some leaf hops in the past but I don't think they've delivered on the bitterness units listed on the package. I'm in the process of building a 3 tier system, and want to have a method of filtering out pellet hops trub, or going to a whole hops method. Thanks for all your help. gw

Are you using a siphon right now, or is this coming out of a spigot at the bottom of the pot? I ask because you talk about your 3-tier plan, so maybe you have something like this scheming already. Normally I swirl around the last bits in the kettle in order to pile up the sediment and give me a little spot to pull some more stuff out. There's a techical term for this that eludes me. I just played with whole hops today and found it filters things out pretty well by itself. I just tilted the pot for the last bit and the siphon pretty much sucked until there wasn't anymore liquid. It didn't stop from getting clogged. One caution--It was a Belgian Wit and I tossed some of the spices/peels in the pot so I had an extra amount of sediment.

I don't think the pellet trub hurts anything, other than clogging up your equipment. I switched to hop plugs (similar to whole hops) a long time ago though, because I found they are a lot easier to filter out. John.

I've been using pellets for my boils up until Saturday when I used an ounce of Cascade flowers for finishing. I wanted to try this to see if the flowers would help filter the rest of the pellets when I siphon. As it turns out, they did help filter out the sediment from the kettle, but it was harder to get the last of liquid from the bottom. The hop flowers held back pools of wort even when I tilted the kettle slightly to one side. I would use flower in the boil if I had a pot with a spigot on it.. but will probably hold off whenj siphoning. -- Dan

I forget the ratio off-hand. As far as what to use for a three-tier system; I say use whole hops all the way. Buy them in bulk from your favorite retailer or wholesaler (there are plenty of good choices on the Internet). Buy a false bottom for your kettle and you should be all set, just open the spigot and let 'ur rip. -- Thomas T. Veldhouse Key Fingerprint: D281 77A5 63EE 82C5 5E68 00E4 7868 0ADC 4EFB 39F0
