I just made my first batch of homebrew, a Belgian Wit, and it is now in the bottles conditioning. My local homebrew club has a link to this competition http://www.bigbeersfestival.com/brews_homebrew_competition.htm I was thinking about sending a bottle just to see what happens especially since it's only $5 plus postage. I'm assuming that I'll get a critique on my beer. Do you think that I'll be wasting the judges time by doing this? John

But you might want to get some feedback from your local homebrew club members. It's free, and doesn't involve shipping beer. -- Joel Plutchak "Things just fall apart." - Now They'll Sleep (Belly)

While a Belgian Wit is listed in the general categories they accept, I don't think a casual one would do well for the theme of the competition. It looks more like bigger, higher alcohol beers are the main theme of the competition. You have to keep this in mind when preparing a submission. Also, that style is very open to interpetation. The stories I hear are that judges tend to go for a more conservative style with that beer. It might not be how you or a lot of other people--even the judges themselves--like it. Don't take their opinions flat out and feel free to complain on here if something just didn't sound right. Or just send us your beer. ;) Medicjm wrote: > I just made my first batch of homebrew, a Belgian Wit, and it is now in > the bottles conditioning. Do it! The feedback will help you become a better brewer (if you are really aiming to brew-to-style). Just because you targetted a Belgian Wit, I would suggest reviwing the style guidelines and seeing if the resulting beer fits more closely in another style. Sometimes a beer designed to be one style will actually perform better in competition in another category. Reading the style guidelines can help you decide the best way to enter it. Or, you can enter the same beer in a few different categories and see the resulting, different comments on the beer. Good Luck! Entering competitions can be very rewarding, as the beer community is can be pretty tight, especially in a particular region. And having your beer brewed in a large batch could be a big ego boost, but on the other hand some people pay big bucks for recipie formulation. A couple things to remember: * Some of the guys that enter are pro brewers who also home brew or they have Kick-A** systems that are like little pilot breweries. Every beer is judged on it's merrit, but having a easily sanitized system really helps to reduce errors and unknowns. * If it is a large competition there will be entries from brewers across the country. * Part of the art in entering the competition is to make sure that you enter the correct style. A Geuze entered as a Barley Wine will not win -- Guaranteed. * There can be bottle to bottle variation. One infected bottle can kick you out. There can be radically different score sheets if the competion has multiple rounds. * Every judge is different. There is some element of science, but there is also subjectivity. * The system is set up to compare a beer against the "ideal", negative criticism should be taken constructively. Go the next step and understand what causes certain flaws. (i.e -- why might a beer be phenolic or Corn like? Why might a beer turn sour?). In the end remember that there is a community out there to help you brew better.
