Subject: Home made cooler mash tun: drilling the hole

Re: Making a home-made cooler mash tun.

I have purchased a rectangular cool box. But it doesn't have a drain
plug. Looks like I will have to start drilling...

Question: I need to fit a clear plastic tube, 1/2 inch ID, 3/8 inch OD.
What's the neatest way to do this. Some people advocate fitting a large
rubber stopper and drilling through the rubber stopper to fit the tube.
Alternatively, I could drill a 3/8 inch hole, fit the tube and add a
couple of rubber washers for water-tightness.

Thanks
Bruce

Thanks, Tom.
But I am not sure my wire braid manifold would fit onto this -- it
seems to be 1 inch diameter.
Also, the walls of the cooler are nearly 1 inch. Again, I am not sure
this would fit.

Thanks.
What does a drain spigot look like -- are they available from home brew
shops?

I just got a standard brass spigot from the plumbing section of the hardware
store and used that.

Yep. And use an 'O' ring on either side to seal. Simple.

I would install a drain spigot.
Use food grade silicone.

Thanks, All. Looks like fitting a spigot of some sort could be the way
to go.

Best thing I have found for cutting a hole in a cooler is a spiral saw and a
steady hand. See my page on how to make a coffin mash tun.
