Subject: Help -- what style did I brew?

A few weeks ago I started on a recipe, but some stuff was missing...
then houseguests showed up and I got distracted. So I don't know what
the hell I brewed. I'm a bit of a novice with styles... any idea what
style (or pseudo-style) I might have created? This is not for
competition or anything.

5 gallon extract / 70 min full boil / 4 gallon final volume
3# light, 3# dark DME malt
6 oz crystal malt, 6 oz flaked oats steeped 20 minutes
1 oz 12% Chinook bittering hops, no finishing hops
Windsor dry yeast

I get about 59 IBUs and a FG of about 1.046... seems that it's up with
the brown ales. Beyond that I have no idea what's gonna come out of
the bottles. Thanks.

Tim

You brewed beer!

If I had to call it something though, probably "Oatmeal Brown Ale"?

BTW, you're not really supposed to just steep oats. Ideally, they're
supposed to be mashed.

Thanks -- I think I used the phrase "steeping" incorrectly. Basically
I put the grains in a bag in a small pot of 150F water for 20 minutes,
then added the water to the wort. I am confused by a lot of the
all-grain terminology, so perhaps what I did was a sort of mash. (?)

No, you did a steep. In order to do a mash you'd need enzymes to convert
the starches to sugars. I don't think either the Crystal or the Oats
have any enzymes for conversion. You'd need to add a lb or so of a base
grain in order to be mashing.

No, you did not mash, as to do that would require pale malt grains.
Mashing is all about conversion of the starches to sugars via the
enzymes present in the PM. Crystal has no enzymes to contribute, but
nor does it need to be mashed. You are correct to say you steeped.
However, as the other respondant noted, oats really need to be mashed,
which means the enzymes from PM grains will convert their starches to
sugars. Oats have no enzymes of their own to do this.

You have brewed a porter...er, probably bordering on a stout but without the
roasted barley, I'd say more of a porter IMO.
BTW, I don't think that steeping the oats and adding them will make a great
deal of difference, they really need to be mashed to get the most out of
them - you might get a little bit of benefit but it would be small I'd say.
