So I was sitting and enjoying a Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest just a few
minutes ago. I was sitting there gazing at the beautiful bottle.
Thanking God the Germans believe in green bottles. When I noticed on
the right side of the label "ALE" next to the proof of Purchase. Why
does it say that?

On a (Hopefully) completely seperate topic, have any of you had the HS
Oktoberfest this year? It tastes different then in years past. More
nuttyer, perhaps even biscuity. More Munich Malt ya think? It's just
different. Try it. I think I like the years past better.

Could just be weird local taxation laws. Some places require any beer over
a certain ABV to be labeled as "ale" or "malt liquor" because it puts it
into a different tax bracket. The fact that it's really a lager doesn't
matter much to the people passing the laws.

Bart... That must be the cases (also going along with what Denny said).
The A by % is 5.8, a bit high for the average BMC drinkers.

denny, yes you should try it this year. I think I lean more toward
the Spaten Oktoberfest of the mainstream Oktoberfests but then again
I've never been to Germany! I am by the way in Chicago.

It's a USA thing. By law (at least by an old law) beer can't
advertize its percentage, but wine _must_. (No pun intended.)
Further, beer was categorized strictly by alcohol content into
the categories "beer", "malt liquor", and "ale", in order of
strength. The law said that if a beer was of a certain
alcohol content then it _must_ be labeled "ale". It has
nothing to do with style.

I see beers all the time on boxes etc. that list ABV. Ice beers being the
ones I recall the most.

I think the law changed a few years ago. It might be a state/county thing
though, rather than federal.

I'm pretty sure that it's a state or county thing. In some cases ABV
*must* be displayed. In others, it's illegal to display it. All pretty
hilarious when you think about it...

Yup. The purported thinking is that wine ABV must be reported
so that the _more intellegent_ wine drinkers can make informed
choices. OTOH, low-brow beer-swillers, who are controlled
solely by their appetites would chase after the
highest ABV they could find, and so must be protected from such
aggressive marketing practices.

Personally, I've never met a wine drinker that impressed me
with either his intellegence nor his ability to make good
decisions. (After all, he chose wine over beer.) Have
you ever heard of a "beer-o"? Me neither.

Coors challenged the federal standard years ago and won the right to place
the abv on their containers. States rights, however, take precedence.

Are you by any chance in Texas? That's one of the states that dictates
beer labelling based on bizarre ideas. Almost any strong lager you find
in Texas is labelled as an ale. I assure you that HP Ofest is NOT an
ale!

Why? Brown bottles are the thing to go for. They prevent the beer becoming
light-struck/skunked. Green and clear glass offer no protection.

Sorry... Correction! Thanking God the Germans DON'T believe in green
bottles (At Least for Oktoberfest).

German brewers don't. Unfortunately German marketing people and accountants
do and they only care about the look that sells. They wouldn't know decent
beer if it jumped up and bit them in the arse. This is also why it's nigh
on impossible to get unfiltered German lager in the UK.

Unfortunately, I had a skunked Spaten Ofest from a green bottle
yesterday...

Yeah -- PLENTY of continental breweries still use green bottles
unfortunately -- one of the reasons PU usually sucks from bottles. But
even brown bottles will get skunky eventually unless they're kept out of
light.

Fortunately the local tap room here should get Spaten and Paulaner
OFest on tap soon. Lunch will get just a little longer...

The place where I bought this beer is great about that...they have unlit
coolers. It must have happened before it got to them. Funny thing is
that I also bought a Spaten pils, but it was in a BROWN bottle! Makes
ya wonder why they used green for the Ofest!

The place mentioned above is getting dset to put 10 different Ofests on
tap!

Picked up a Spaten Ofest yesterday that was skunked! First time I've
ever had a bad one, and the place I bought it does a great job of
storage. Bummed....I also picked up an Ayinger Ofest that was heavenly!

I once got some Spaten O'fest (in brown 0.5l bottles)
that had soured!

Haven't seen that one in a long time, but ir was always
a favorite. I hope your sighting indicates it's being
imported again!

My favorite GoodBeer store here pretty much always has it in stock,
along with pretty much all of Ayinger's line.

I made a Hacker Pschorr O-fest clone recently that turned out nicely.
Accidently made it into a Bock, though, by overshooting my OG and
underhopping.
