I am in the market for a grain mill and would like some opinions about
the mills currently on the market. Anybody want to help a newbie
all-grainer? Thanks, Mike

Valley mills are no longer being produced so if you want one, find a shop
that has it in stock since they won't be able to get any more. Personally,
I have used a Philmill II and really like that. At some point that is the
mill I will be getting. Apart from anything else, Dan's a helpful poster on

That's too bad. I've got one, and IMO it's a nice mill. I probably would
not recommend getting one now though, even if you can find it. Although
I've never had any problems with mine, it sounds like there won't be any
support and/or replacement parts coming from the company anymore.

Either that or Saint Pat's.
No, wait, she's too good for us homebrewers. Never mind!

I bought a Phil Mill I (as opposed to a Phil Mill 2) last year. I did
several partial mashes with it and then made the move to all-grain and
it's done well for me. A bit of winding required if you do 7-12 lbs of
grain with it, but not too bad.

I may have to re-work the adjustment handle (the original is too
small) but other than that it's been great. YMMV.

I have a non-adjustable JSP MaltMill which (other than the particle
board base) has held up quite well. Were I to do it all over again I'd
probably get the Barley Crusher, which is adjustable.

I have an old JSP MaltMill, adjustable one end with case hardened rollers.
I'm the second owner. The first was my LHBS. It has had a lot of malt
through it. I have had no problems with it. The case hardened rollers are
nice. I use Muntons pale malt as a base and find rocks on occasion.

This subject has come up from time to time. Of all the mills mentioned in
the other replies, there doesn't seem to be a bad one. It mostly boils down
to cost and features that are important to the buyer.

I've bought a Phil Mill about a year back and, overall, it's pretty
good. It cost me $89 at that time and I bought it over the other mills
out there as it does everything the more expensive mills do for almost
1/2 the price. I think they go for $99 now. It does a good crush and
it is adjustable. The construction of the unit is excellent and it
looks like it will last for years to come. Dislikes that I have about
it is using a cutoff soda bottle for the hopper. A more substantial
hopper would be welcome. Also, it is not particularly fast as it will
take you about 10-15 minutes to crush 10 pounds of grain. However, it
can be motorized to speed up the process. All in all, it's a good
quality mill for the price and one that you should consider.

I have had my B3 grain mill for 3 years or so, and think very highly of it.
I have the adjustible model, which is a little pricey, but I feel worth it.

Beer here,

Just about any of the roller mills designed for homebrew use would be fine.
There really isn't that much difference between them. They're generally
all of good build quality (except for one called "HuskBuster" with plastic
rollers, I would definitely avoid that one) and perform very well. IMO, the
biggest factors are going to be whether you want an adjustable mill or not
(I would recommend getting an adjustable one) and what brands you can find
locally (or prices online if you have to order one).

There have been lots of discussions on here in the past about the different
brands. If you have one you're thinking about, you can search the old posts
in the group and probably find some specific comments on it.

Basically though, I think most people's answer to the question "which is your
favorite mill" will be the one that they own. I haven't really seen anybody
unhappy with any of the major brands.
