My wife and I are planning a trip to Germany this fall-probably to the
SW.Where have you been and can you recommend any places to
eat/visit/drink/stay based on recent trips? Since I am a long term home
brewer I particularly am interested in beer related sitesWe like simple
places but do not like a shared WC.
Thanks in advance to all

I have been stationed near Bitburg, Germany for three years and never
want to leave! It is a great place and my wife and I love it here.

If you are going near the oldest German city of Trier follow the Mosel
River north (on highway B53 use Google Maps) to the village
Bernkastel-Kues. Stop every ten minutes and try all the wieners ;-).
And the views of the river and vineyards on the valley hills are
amazing.

My favorite micro-brewery is the Kloster Machern, on the Mosel River,
across from the village of Zeltingen (on highway B53 use Google Maps).

and

Favorite place to eat an authentic Eiffel (this area of Germany) heavy
country meal is in the small town of Laufeld at the Laufeld Hof
restaurant and hotel. They also have Bitburger beer on tap ;-).

http://www.laufelder-hof.de/

P.S. They speak English at the Kloster Machern if you initiate a
little German ;-). In Laufeld you are on your own so bring a German
food translation book if needed and smile allot.

Contact me directly if you have any other questions and enjoy your
trip!

Kyle,

Are you perhaps at Spang? I was stationed there from '92-'95 and lived in
Speicher, 18 Neustrasse. We loved it too.
There was a great little bar/restaurant in Beilingen that we passed the time
in before our families were able to join us. Really hospitable folks, and
brought out the homemade Apfel and Kirsch Schnapps. Ahh....

What restaurant in the Eifel DOESN'T have Bitburg on tap??? ;o).

I second the Bamberg suggestion. The Rauchbier is excellent, and the
town was not bombed in WW2, so lots of original architecture.

I was in Freudenstadt (in the Black Forest) in the 1983. Great little
town. They had a midsummer festival in the village square the first
week of July -- it looked like a St. Pauli Girl commercial -- beer
maids wearing those >ahem< quaint little outfits, carrying those
gigantic glass mugs of beer around. What a trip! I don't recall the
name of the local brewery that we visited nearby, but they made a
delicious Pils.

If I were going back to Deutchland, I'd HAVE to include a day or two in
Dusseldorf to sample the array of altbiers available there. I don't
have any one favorite style of beer, but if I did, it would probably be
alt. (Does that make sense?) And Dusseldorf is to altbier what Dublin
is to Irish Stout.

Have fun!

Jerry

Yes, but like another poster, try to get to D-dorf. Drinking Uerige at the
brewpub is worth the trip.

This should be interesting. We are looking into a similar trip. That area
has family connections for us.

My grandfather was from Germany and my wife's family who originally came to
New Orleans in 1850 has always married into families who came from Germany
or descendants thereof and who lived in the German sector-"little
saxony".I'll bet her DNA is interesting!! I am a mixed breed.
Lots were sausage makers like many of the fine Germans of
Porkopolis-a.k.a. Cincinnatti. Our homebrew club meets in an old meeting
hall-Deutsches Haus-and all the old line breweries-now closed- were owned by
Germans..ain't just Cajuns down here!

For sheer 'Damn that is awesome grandure' see Cologne, the Dom
Cathedral is amazing. Lots of great Kolsch. Duesseldorf was nice, but
you only need to be there for a day to hit the 4 main Aldstadt brewpubs
and see the Aldstadt.

I'd agree on seeing Trier. An interesting town.

I assume you'll be flying into Frankfurt? There is a great brewpub in
Mainz (close to frankfurt by train) called the Eisgrub. Mainz is worth
seeing. It has the Gutenburg Museum (first printed books), and some
very old churches and a nice old-town section.

I would also like to see Franconia, and also wander around in the small
towns of Bavaria.

Taking the train between places is great. There are lots of little
towns everywhere, and one can only assume there is a brewery in most of
them.

Be prepared for the hotel rooms. Small beds and tiny bathrooms. There
are American style hotels in the larger cities, but they are more
expensive. Of course, as long as you are marginally comfortable, who
cares.. just sleep in the room.

John,

I am stationed their and love it. We lived in Speicher for a bit too.
Germans are great folks once you get to talking with them. I will
never forget the first time I tasted true German Schnapps. It's a
killer! My favorite factory brand is the local Eiffel Gheist made in
Wittlich. As for the home made stuff I have been lucky enough to
travel deep into the woods on Volksmarches with the men from my village
and live to tell the tale ;-).

I never did any of the Volksmarches, but my landlord made his own Apfelwein
from the apples on his tree. We decided to live "on the economy" there
instead of in off-base housing. If you don't mind me asking, what are you
stationed there for?

Uerige is awesome. I think that Im Fuchschen was great as well,
fewer tourists and more locals.

Note that you need to contact any of the brew pubs a good two weeks
ahead of time to schedule tours of the brewery. I was able to get in
at Fuchschen by scheduling, but I just walked in at Schumacher and
Schlussel and wasn't able to get into the tour.

Maybe it was as a result of Carnival or something, but the Cologne
brewpubs were hopping, the whole bar singing drinking songs about
Cologne. It was the at the Malzmuhle....

No singing in D-Dorf that day.... ;-(
