Subject: Germ Eliminator Lamp?

This will make lives a lot easier, IF it works as described. Do you guys
think this thing is a waste of money? Who really wants to hold it a 1/2 inch
from their wort? I'd like to see some studies done by actual homebrewers as
opposed to labs. Too many variables, IMO, when using something like this
with brewing.

What do you think?

Uhh... Looks like heavy duty UV to me. Can you smell a skunk? For
equipment, maybe, but not for beer.

Besides, dipping in sanitizer just isn't that challenging.

Yeah... unless I'm missing something, I completely agree. It looks like
it UV lamp, which is potentially a bad idea for application.

Here's Wikipedia's article on Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation:

http://qurl.com/lhwdn

One key thing to note from the article:

"UV-C radiation is able to break-down chemical bonds. This is leads to
rapid ageing of plastics (insulations, gasket) and other materials.
Note that plastics sold to be "UV-resistant" are tested only for UV-B,
as UV-C doesn't occur normally at surface."

Personally I would not use UV lamp for sanitization; I'd just stick
with something like Iodophor. Much safer.

day without sunshine you can still get drunk.

WTF? Over?

There's no way they can be serious about using a UV lamp on freshly-boiled
wort, but that appears tobe be exactly what their ad says. Hope they don't
mind Pepe le Peu making himself at home. :-P

what a stupid idea, god some places will try sell you any crap.

yeast HATES UV light, it will kill your yeast and bacteria will grow.
honestly i don't know of anyone with infection problems, this thing is
simply not needed.
