Subject: First Post. Infection Question???
|
Hello to all, I have been lurking here for a while and after reading through a good bit of information, finally decided to get into the hobby. As my father and I enjoy a good Oktoberfest, and it was around the season, I decided to start there. The recipe was as follows: 7 lbs Amber Malt Extract (Muntons) 1/2 lb Crystal Malt (40L) 1/8 lb Weyerman Carafa I Barley Malt (300-338L) 1/2 lb 6 Row Pale Malt - Roasted at 350 (o) F for 10 min. Bittering 1 oz Hallertau leaf hops AA: 4.8% 1/4 oz Mt. Hood pellet Hops AA: 3.8% Finishing 1/4 oz Mt. Hood Pellet Hops Original Gravity ended up being 1.048 I fermented in my primary for about 5 days, it seemed done with most of the fermenting after about 3. I then racked to a secondary carboy and left it alone for 2 weeks. When I pulled a sample to test my specific gravity (Final was 1.011) I noticed what seemed to be three of four small white deposits (couldn't tell if they were fine bubbles, but looked a little waxy) on the surface of the beer. I then siphoned to my bottling bucket and bottled the beer. I tasted the sample that I pulled, and it tasted great, it was also really clear. Seemed like all was well...BUT... On the sides of the secondary carboy I noticed these tiny white specks on the side that started at the surface of the beer and were eveident about 4 inches down from there. The specks were more prominent near the top two inches and thinned out after that. As I said the beer was clear and tasted very good. Should I be concerned with the white deposits on the beer surface and the sides of the carboy. Again this is my first brew, and I am just not sure if this is normal or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mitch

Fermentation is just basically somewhat messy. Floaties are a pretty common occurrence. -- (Replies: cleanse my address of the Mark of the Beast!) Any help would be greatly appreciated. I wouldn't worry about it. It could have been the beginning of an infection, but it could have also been lots of normal things. Bubbles, a little bit of yeast, left over trub from the primary. There are lots of things that could look like what you describe. Let the beer carbonate and sit in the bottles for a little bit and then see how they turn out. It's probably nothing to worry about, and even if it was there's not much you can do about it now. John.
