Subject: First AG is done and in the fermenter!

Finished my first all grain this weekend, and aside from a couple of small
mishaps and a bit of disorganization, all went well. Couple of things to
remember next time, make sure all hose clamps are tight, especially on the
immersion chiller (I had the inlet hose pop off), keep distractions at a
minimum (like your 7 year old in the pool trying to get you to join him, I
turned my head for a minute and got 200 degree water splashed on my thumb)
and organize the process better, maybe add another boil pot. Oh yeah, and
don't brew outside when the weather hits 110 (I'm in California's central
valley). Otherwise I think I had a successful brew day. I ran my recipe
through ProMash and kept lots of notes and when all was said and done,
ProMash calculated my efficiency at 82%! I was surprised to see that
number, but I've checked everything from water quantity to boil times to
SG measurements and it all looks correct. Now I can't wait for it to
finish so I can taste it.

The recipe was in Irish Red that I compiled myself after some looking at
several recipes and getting some advice here.

10.50# Pale Malt (2 row)
0.50# Crystal 50 - 60 L
0.25# Cara Vienne Malt
0.25# Roasted Barley

Mash for 90 minute at 150F in 3.6 gal
Add 1.4 gal Mash out for 15 minutes at 198F
Sparged with 5.5 gal at 170F

Boiled for 15 min. and then added 1/2 ounce Northern Brewer.
Boiled another 45 min. then added 1teaspoon Irish Moss.
Boiled another 10 min. and added 1 ounce EK Goldings and boiled for 5
minutes. Chilled to 75F and pitched White Labs Irish Ale yeast WLP004.

SG at 75F 1.061 (adjusted for temp, 1.064). ProMash recipe target was
1.065.

It was along brew day, but I think I can cut the time by 1/3 just by being
a bit more organized.

Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks,
Rick Knight

You're an idiot.
