Hello, On Sunday I brewed my first all grain batch - all of your advice and comments were appreciated and very helpful! My 70-quart mashtun worked like a charm - the half-inch diameter copper slotted manifold and drain worked great, delivering a bit of husk material for the first 2 or 3 seconds of running (which was returned to the tun), then running clean and free of debris. I batch sparged and was impressed with how quickly the cooler drained...it was fast, like a marsupial! I didn't precisely time how long the tun took to drain, but my guess is that I collected enough wort for a 10 gallon batch in about than 10 to 15 minutes. The moment of truth came when the first runnings flowed from the golden grain bed - I tasted the liquor and it was sweet - that really is sweet success! I'm a little skeptical of this reading and wish I'd double checked this number with my second hydrometer. Based on this result, Beersmith (the brewing software package) indicated that my Brewhouse Efficiency was 90.6%. This just seems too high. Any thoughts? By the way, the fermentables in the 10.5 gallons of boiled wort included 11 pounds of pale 2-row malt and 1 pound of grits. In comparing the time needed for extract and partial mash against all-grain, it really didn't take that much more time. It only added maybe 1.75 hours to my brew day, and 90 minutes of that was spent drinking homebrew while watching a movie by the fireplace. That's the type of extra work I like! Cleanup was a breeze; the mashtun features a removable manifold, so removing grain bits from the nooks and crannies was easy. Cheers! Scott P. Brewing in Boise, Idaho

Any small measurement errors in either the SG or the volume will throw off your efficiency calculation. John.

One thing that was interesting is that I wasted very little wort following the sparge...there was maybe 8 ounces of fluid left in the mashtun (aside that held by the grain) when I cleaned it and I evaporated at least 2.5 and maybe as much as 3 gallons of fluid during a very vigorous 75 minute boil.
