Subject: Fed up w/ my LHBS. Online retail suggestions?

Well, I'm pretty much fed up with my local homebrew shop to the point
where I'll never go back. 90% of the time, they don't have what I
need...even after calling to check. On the phone, they ALWAYS say
"yes, I have <x >"....I show up, and they don't. I always get "Well,
this is comparable" and "you caught me at a bad time on my stock".
This has happened nearly EVERY time... I'm tired of making the 45min
drive, after calling to verify they have what I need, only to find that
they don't when I show. I even call to verify someone will be there
because a good # of times, there is a sign on the door "Be back soon".
Very frustrating. I understand shit happens, but shit happens at this
LHBS too often. Anyways.... enough about my frustrations. Thanks for
listening. :)

I'm looking for a robust online retailer. I'd like to do the dampfbier
recipe in the recent BYO mag, and can't find all of the ingredients
online. I'd prefer to order from 1 site, but if I can't, that's ok. I
just want to make a beer with the targeted ingredients for once.

>From the BYO recipe, I'm looking for:
Weyermann Pilsner
Weyermann Munich Type I
Hallertauer Mittelfruh
WLP380

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have used both:

http://www.northernbrewer.com/
http://morebeer.com/

Never any problems and both have a wide variety of ingredients.

I have finally found a LHBS that is outstanding! Prior to that I used
www.northernbrewer.com or for decent kits I started with
www.homebrewheaven.com.

If you live in the midwest I would give the Grape and Granary a try.
www.thegrape.net. I had the same issue with LHBS being expensive and
having limited supply, so I gave these guys a try around three years
ago, and they have always done me right.

When I was living in the Twin Cities, my LHBSs were Northern Brewer
and Midwest Supplies, and I was happy with both. I still use them
frequently mailorder, since my LHBS now doesn't always have what I
need.

I like to use http://www.morebeer.com for anything that my LHBS doesn't
carry.

I use Maryland Homebrew in Columbia, MD. www.MDHB.com
They are extremely knowledgeable and have talked me out of doing
things and of buying equipment before I needed it. They do mail
order, but their website is a '6' and you get your real value
from talking with them.

I have used The Flying Barrel in Frederick. www.flyingbarrel.com
This is another LHBS where their expertise is worth the price.
Their website is a '5', but they do 'Brew on Premise' at a very
reasonable price.

Then there is Austin Homebrew. www.austinhomebrew.com
Their website is a '9'. Their selection is terrific. Their
shipping is cost effective.

Listermann - www.listermann.com
Midwest Supplies - www.midwestsupplies.com
I have used them both and will do so again.

When I want bulk yeast or bulk chemicals, I always go to
Grapestompers in the Promised Land of North Carolina.
www.grapestompers.com They are as knowledgeble as Maryland
Homebrew and delivery is immediate.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Listermann's http://www.listermann.com/
His customer service is number 1 in my book and it used to be free shipping
east of the Mississippi. With transportation the way it is I would guess
he's had to make some changes.

I live in Indianapolis, IN.

I have ordered tons from MoreBeer. They have made mistakes on a lot
of my orders but I still love them because they are all so nice and
always quickly and cheerfully fix any mistakes. They have recently
taken majors steps to tighten up their order fulfillment QA. Mainly
more personal responsibility from the shipping staff.

I have had excellent experience with Northern Brewer. Every order has
shipped same day and has been accurate and very carefully packed.
They just don't have some things that Morebeer has.

Williams has been good on all orders.

Grape and Granary has been accurate and packed things carefully but
has always taken 2 plus days to get an order out the door. Even
though they are the closest to me, their orders take as long to reach
me as orders from CA. Hey G&G hint, hint :-)

Have you tried Great Fermentations? It's in Indy.

Strange. I'm over 100 miles west of you, and have
been able to depend on Grape and Granary to get my
order to me by the weekend if I order before noon on
a Wednesday. They're one of my favorite shops.

I do a lot of walk-in business with Great Fermentations.

They are a great LHBS.

I was very impressed with the care G&G takes in packaging their
shipments. They even wrapped the books very neatly in brown wrapping
paper. The reason my orders took so long is that it took them 2-3
business days to get the order out the door on each order.

Not complaining, just comparing.

I really like them and will continue to order from them.
