Subject: EDME keg for sale (locally), cheap
|
I have a like-new EDME keg for sale in the merrimac valley/ southern NH area. Cheap. Asking ten bucks. Or even less if this post results in lots of derisive laughter. Let's get one thing out of the way -- this thing is junk. Well, allright, not quite junk; it works, but there's a reason people move on to corny kegs. Okay, now, while I wait for my copy of "sales pitch techniques" on tape to arive in the mail, some info: I am selling this because I have corny kegs, and as I haven't brewed in three years, I sure don't need it. It is in perfect working condition. It includes a heavy plastic keg, with a lid with O-ring, a plastic CO2 injector that takes 8g cartridges, and an ordinary spigot with a floating pickup at the bottom. No leaks. Sanitize with your choice of deadly toxin, add priming sugar, and afix lid. Use an empty CO2 cartridge or nothing at all in the injector for several days. Then add a cartridge, chill, and dispense. What's good: It works. If you're serious about brewing, go with corny kegs like everyone else. If you're on a tight budget, get this. Great for parties where you don't want to bring your CO2 tank & regulator, if for example, you're worried it might turn out to be the sort of party where those items end up being confiscated by the police as evidence. This thing could easily be pressed into service as a sparge-tank for larger batches as it would hold ~8.5 gallons, has handles molded into the sides, has a spigot and is very heavy (5mm?) polypropylene. Not much use for boiling wort in. Not so good: You must sugar prime, unless you have about $10/batch to spend on CO2 cartridges, in which case you'd have real kegs, wouldn't you? As there is a lot of headspace for even a six-gallon batch, it only takes about a half-cup of corn sugar to prime. After that, you use the CO2 cartridges to dispense. It takes 3-4 of those to dispense an entire 5-6 gallon batch with a decent head. It takes little (8g) cartridges which doesn't help. And they run a bit pricey; sorry, it's been too long to remember exactly, but I think ~$7 for a 12-pack. You can hear the CO2 go in as the beer comes out, but that doesn't guarantee you won't eventually dispense that last beer of the evening just as the cartidge is giving up, and then come back to flat beer a few days later. If that happens, you can re-prime with sugar, or expect to go through the better part of two cartridges to force-carbonate. Oh, and it's not tall & skinny like a corny; it looks as if someone fed one of those hineken keg-cans a bunch of steriods, so that means you'll pretty much have to find a full-size fridge to dedicate to this thing. Oh, and if some dope tries to lift the thing by the injector, it will break (it's plastic with a metal regulator inside). I think it would be a shame for me to throw this out, as it works and besides, that would be environmentally naughty. So I'll let it go to anyone with $10 who is willing to pick it up in my area. Sorry, but I just don't see me shipping this. Sold for some $65 in brew shops in its day. Was a bargain at that price (not!). Don't know if it's made anymore. The only part I could see needing to be replaced is the injector. If that breaks, I know morebeer sells one made for corny kegs. I'm sure it could easily be modified to work with this. And when I say "I'm sure", I mean the kind of sure feeling you get when you've never actually seen the thing. If you're still reading, contact me at Enn Arr Tee Bee U Gee at adelphia dawt communist. You may reply to this post if you wish to make fun of me or warn others from purchasing this, but it's not a good way to actually contact me if you want the thing. Eric

Price reduced! And location included in the subject line this time, although I doubt that will make any difference. Surely someone knows some impoverished brewer that could get some use out of this thing? erl
