Subject: Dry hopping with pellets

I want to make a recipe that calls for dry hopping but alas my LHBS had no
plugs or whole hops the recipe called for but they had pellets. I've read
these can be used for dry hopping but some people say use more pellets cause
they have less volotile oils than whole. Others say they have more than
whole cause they are compressed. can someone clarify this for me please?
also alot say add them straight to the wort some say use a stocking to keep
fine particles from getting in your final brew. Is this a problem? wouldn't
they dissolve and float to the bottom while the carboy sits for another
week? I don't want to end up with a gritty beer because particles of hop
pellets are floating in it. Thanx in advance.

Gerard

I've used pellet hops to dry-hop during secondary fermentation with great
results. It adds a whole new level of complexity to the aroma of the beer
that you can't otherwise get. The pellets do fall apart, but they settle
out nicely, so if you are careful when you rack your beer for
bottling/kegging you won't have any issues.

Do you use more pellets or less when converting from whole hops. i.e. 1 oz
dry hops = how many ozes pellet?

1/2 oz does the trick.

Use a one to one ratio and just drop them into your secondary carboy and rack
your beer on top. Leave a couple of inches of head space as your beer will
foam and the hops will float until the carbon dioxide expires. After a couple
of days, give it a bit of a swirl to aid the hops in falling out (they can get
quite stuck to the sides)..

There is a difference, but IMO unless you are making this for a competition
just swap them 1:1. Especially since you're just dry hopping with them.

The pellets will turn to sludge. Some people don't care, others will
put them in a hop bag first. It's up to you.
