Just curious if it's possible to just throw in a hop or two in a bottle during bottling and get the same effect as dry hopping in a fermenter or keg. I actually use a cp filler off the keg, but I'm bottling for some friends for the holidays. Just thinking about the coolness facter of having a hop in the bottle, along with some additional hop aroma. Would this work?

The hop would swell up and break apart within a short time, leaving a funky thing floating in the bottle and, later, in the glass. IOW, a gimmick to bring appeal to an otherwise disgusting swill. If it's good brew, don't goof it up with something like floating a hop in it. No clue how it would affect the flavor over time but I can't imagine that it would enhance it in the mid to longer term. From the novelty standpoint of showing them a little of the ingredients of their brew, assuming that is partially what you are after, perhaps a tiny mesh bag with some uncrushed grains and a few whole hops around the neck of the bottle would suffice for the coolness factor you are after? Anyways, that's my $0.02. :)

I've actually tried it before and couldn't tell the difference, although I was using homegrown hops that I know are on the mild side for flavor and aroma. If you used a pungent hop of some kind, you might get something out of it. But I think you'd have to add more than one or two. Plus, the hops might cause gushers if you don't carbonate on the low end. -- Dave "Fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking." -- Brad Paisley

It would probably work, but unless your friends are really into beer, the average person would probably think a hop cone floating in their bottle is gross. John.
